POTSDAM, N.Y. – Three different goal scorers found the back of the net as the Union College men's hockey team defeated Clarkson University, 3-2, Friday night at Cheel Arena.
"It was an unbelievable experience and it was a lot of up and downs," said head coach
Josh Hauge. "The guys stayed the course and found a way."
Union improves to 4-6-1 on the season and 2-1-0 in ECAC Hockey play. Friday's win marked Union's first road win of the season and the first victory at Clarkson since January 27, 2017, when the Dutchmen came away with a 6-2 victory.
Union went 1-for-4 on the powerplay and was 5-for-7 on the penalty kill. The Dutchmen were out shot 36 to 17.
First-year
Nate Hanley led the way with two points on the night with a pair of assists. Junior
Liam Robertson scored his second power-play tally of the season. Sophomore
Josh Nixon scored for the second game in a row and junior
Tyler Watkins registered his team-leading sixth goal of the year.
In a rollercoaster of a first period, Union came out on top with a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes. Clarkson opened the scoring at 4:31 of the first period when Trey Taylor beat senior
Connor Murphy stick-side on the powerplay. Union answered a few minutes later with a power-play goal of their own. Hanley sent a cross-ice pass to senior
Chris Theodore who ripped a shot from the top of the right circle that Robertson tipped in for the goal. Clarkson added a second goal, but an extensive review overturned the goal and put Union on a five-minute powerplay. The Dutchmen added a second goal with 55 seconds remaining in the frame off the stick of Nixon. Junior
Nic Petruolo sent a shot from the left-wing circle that bounced off of Ayrton Martino in the slot. Nixon sent a quick turnaround shot to beat Ethan Haider for the score.
After a scoreless second period, each team found the back of the net in the third period. Sophomore
Cullen Ferguson backhanded a shot towards the net. Junior
Chaz Smedsrud redirected the pass between the legs of a Clarkson defender and Watkins tapped it in the open net. Ryan Taylor cut the score to one with 3:37 to play with a power-play goal for the Golden Knights.
Murphy made a season-high 37 saves to improve to 4-4-1 on the year. Haider stopped 14 shots for the loss.
Union is back in action tomorrow with an ECAC Hockey matchup with St. Lawrence. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Appleton Arena.
