Union Comes From Behind to Defeat #18 Northeastern

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – In a tightly-contested game, it was the Union College men's hockey team that emerged victorious over #18/19 Northeastern University, 3-2, Saturday night at Messa Rink.

This marks Union's first win over a ranked opponent this season as the Dutchmen improve to 6-8-1 on the season and 5-1 on home ice.

Seven Dutchmen found the scoresheet with first-year Nate Hanley registering two points. Seniors Owen Farris and Chris Theodore and junior Liam Robertson all found the back of the net in the win. Sophomore Caden Villegas and first-year defenders John Prokop and Nick Young all recorded an assist.

Northeastern opened the scoring at 10:24 of the first period. Northeastern took possession at the blueline and after a few back and forth passes, Jack Williams buried it past senior Connor Murphy.

Farris netted the equalizer on a breakaway. Prokop found Farris at neutral ice on a change and the senior captain lifted one past Devon Levi on a breakaway. The Huskies responded almost four minutes later when Justin Hryckowian tapped in a rebound off a shot from Aidan McDonough. Vinny Borgesi was called for a trip at 17:45 of the second period to put Union on the powerplay. Hanley took a shot and Robertson tapped it home at 19:07 of the frame for his third power-play goal of the season.

Northeastern initially scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period, but after a review of the play, it was waived off. Theodore tallied the game-winner with a snipe from high in the slot.

Union was outshot 25-16 and went 1-for-1 on the powerplay.

Murphy made 23 saves against to improve to 6-6-1 on the season and Levi stopped 13 shots in the loss.

Combined with the Union College women's hockey team, approximately 250 toys were collected for C.O.C.O.A. House in their annual toy drive.

Union heads to Princeton on Friday for a tilt with the Tigers. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Hobey Baker Rink.
