SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Three goals in the final 1:14 of the game was the difference maker as the Union College men's hockey team fell, 6-4, to Colgate University Friday night at Messa Rink.
Senior
Brandon Estes (1-2-3), junior
Dylan Anhorn (1-2-3), and first-year
Collin Graf (0-2-2) all had a multi-point night. Senior
Josh Kosack and junior
Gabriel Seger both added goals. All four captains scored a goal in the loss to Colgate. Sophomore
Ville Immonen and first-year
Caden Villegas also added assists.
Colgate opened the scoring at 5:17 of the first period. In the defensive end, Colgate won the faceoff, sending the puck in front, where Colton Young picked up the puck to beat junior
Connor Murphy stick side. Estes scored the equalizer, firing a shot from the bottom of the right circle at 13:37 of the opening frame.
Knotted at one each going into the second period, both teams combined for five goals in the second stanza. Union jumped out to a 2-1 lead when Kosack sent a behind-the-back backhand pass over the shoulder of Mitch Benson. Colgate tied the game again at 12:25 and scored the go-ahead goal only 2:06 later off the sticks of Levi Glasman and Ethan Manderville, respectively. Seger added a goal, tipping a shot from Estes to tie the game before Anhorn scored on the lone power-play opportunity of the night.
Leading 4-3 going into the final frame, it was the final 1:14 that changed the direction, as the Raiders found the back of the net three times in 55 seconds. The Raiders pulled Benson for the extra attacker, and only needed 16 seconds to capitalize when Nic Belpedio sent a shot from the high slot to beat Murphy stick-side. Exactly 20 seconds later, Josh McKechney potted the game winner before Griffin Lunn scored an empty netter.
This is the first game since November 1, 2014 that Union was not penalized.
Murphy made 28 saves in the loss and falls to 10-14-2 on the season while Benson registered 27 saves and improves to 3-3-2.
The Dutchmen return to action tomorrow against #15/16 Cornell University. Puck drop is slated for 7:00 p.m. at Messa Rink.
