Burnes and Donahue Nab Player of the Week Honors

TROY, N.Y. – After leading the nationally ranked Union College men's lacrosse team to a pair of NCAA Tournament victories over the weekend, senior attacker Peter Burnes and sophomore goalie Dan Donahue were recognized as the Liberty League Offensive and Defensive Performers of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.

Burnes picks up his second weekly honor of the season, while Donahue extends his program record with his sixth weekly honor of 2022.

Burnes scored 10 goals with three assists for 13 points in leading the Dutchmen to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament with a pair of victories over the weekend. The Liberty League Offensive Player of the Year scored three goals with an assist in Saturday's 14-7 win over John Carroll University, and then exploded for a career-high seven goals and nine points in a 21-11 win over Western New England University on Sunday, single-handedly outscoring WNE 7-6 over the first three quarters before sitting out the fourth frame with the game well in hand.

With at least one more game left on the schedule, Burnes is tied with Union Hall of Famer Nate Fitch '93 for second on the school single-season goals list with 55, trailing just the 74 of fellow Union Hall of Famer Dennis Walker '74. He is also tied with Walker for third in single-season points at Union, behind only the junior (94 points) and senior (82 points) seasons of Hall of Famer Bob Grossman '75.

Donahue posted a 6.73 goals against average and .625 save percentage in leading the Dutchmen to a pair of NCAA Tournament victories over the weekend. The sophomore stopped 11 shots and only allowed five goals in a 14-7 victory over John Carroll on Saturday, and then came back on Sunday with nine more saves on 16 shots in a 22-11 win over Western New England.

With his two wins, Donahue set a new Union single-season record with 15 victories in goal so far this year. He currently is tied for sixth in school history with 202 saves so far in 2022 while boasting a 9.22 goals against average and .577 save percentage.

The Dutchmen will return to action on Saturday against Gettysburg College in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. Check UnionAthletics.com later this week for a full preview.
