| Box Score 2

CANTON, N.Y. – The Union College men's tennis team kicked off the 2022-23 season this weekend at the St. Lawrence University Fall Classic, held on Saturday and Sunday at the Sammis Tennis Courts.

Union put together several solid performances in the first outing of the season, reaching the semifinals in three of the four singles brackets and one of two doubles brackets.

In the "A" Singles bracket, senior Ioannis Binopoulos and sophomore Ben Jacobs both reached the quarterfinals, with Jacobs outlasting Christian Berko of RIT by an 8-6 score and Binopoulos defeating SLU's Edvin Strandberg, 8-3. Binopoulos added another win to his ledger with a 8-7 (7-2) tiebreaker win over Ithaca's Nicholas Luis before falling 8-4 in the semifinals.

Binopoulos also made a run into the semifinals of the "A" Doubles bracket alongside sophomore Ian Schunk. The pair earned an 8-7 (7-4) first-round win over a tandem from Hamilton and then had a much easier time in the quarterfinals, defeating Berko and Grahith Movva of RIT, 8-1, before falling in the semifinals to the eventual winning pair from Hobart.

Union also had two entries advance in the "D" Singles bracket, where junior Khai Ton and sophomore Austin Gregory emerged from the first round. Gregory knocked off Ithaca's Jacob Wachs 8-4 in the first round, while Ton defeated Ithaca's Deon Kraft in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-3). Union came a tiebreaker away from both players advancing to the semifinals, with Ton defeating Rochester's John Hui, 8-3, and Gregory coming up just short to SLU's Cole Hamilton, 8-7 (7-4). Ton's run came to an end in a semifinal tiebreaker, falling to eventual champion Gianni Esposito of Hamilton, 8-7 (7-2).

Junior Dimitris Binopoulos also made a run into the semifinals of the "C" Singles bracket, outlasting Carlos Hernandez of Ithaca and Jett Wright of Hobart in tiebreakers before falling to eventual winner Broderick Pinto of SLU in the semis, 8-5.

The tandem of sophomore Kurtik Appadoo and first-year Hayden Brown earned a win in the "B" Doubles bracket as well, taking out James Wolpe and Bobby Tremont of SLU in a first-round tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-1).

Union will begin Liberty League play on Wednesday with a 4 p.m. matchup at Bard College.
