SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's tennis team made its first and final appearance on the home courts this semester over the weekend, reaching the finals in four flights at the Dutchmen Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at the Union Tennis Courts.
Junior
Khai Ton came a supertiebreaker short from a title in the "D" bracket, winning twice before coming up just short in the finals. Ton defeated Trinity's Marcus Carlsson, 6-3, 6-2, in the first round before posting a pair of 6-3 sets to takedown SLU's Cole Hamilton. He took the first set from Trinity's Pierce Rutledge in the final, but Rutledge came back to win the second set 6-1 and then took the supertiebreaker, 10-3.
Junior
Dimitris Binopoulos also made the final in the "C" bracket with a pair of victories. He breezed past Oneonta's Noah Khair, 6-0, 6-1, in the first round, before he advanced past Trinity's Brandon Felcher due to a retirement. He fell in the finals to SLU's Broderick Pinto, 6-2, 6-3. Sophomore
Ian Schunk also earned a win in the bracket, defeating Kartik Erodula of Trinity in the first round by a 6-3, 6-3 score.
In the "A" bracket, senior

Both players came up short in the semifinals, with Binopoulos on the wrong end of a close 7-6 (7-2), 7-5 match to Adam Heilbronner of SLU.
Union also had two semifinalists in the "B" bracket thanks to junior
Thomas McGuire and senior
Aidan O'Brien. McGuire had no trouble with William Schmid of Oneonta in a 6-0, 6-1 win, while O'Brien battled from a set down to outlast Jack Ginter of Trinity in a supertiebreaker, 4-6, 6-2, (11-9).
Union racked up the wins in the "E" singles bracket, boasting all four semifinalists and nine wins overall. Sophomores
Austin Gregory and
Seth Prusko both won twice to reach the finals, including semifinal victories over teammates
Jonathan Tsipenyuk and
Ryan Dagan, respectively.
Prusko reached the finals of the "B" doubles bracket as well along with the younger Binopoulos, as the pair posted two wins and came a tiebreaker short of a title. The pair started with an 8-1 win over Yoni Glattman and Braden Greenberg of Oneonta, and made the final with a 7-3 tiebreaker win over John Hill-Edgar and Edvin Strandberg (SLU) before dropping a 7-2 tiebreaker to Felcher and Sanchez-Carrion of Trinity.
Jacobs and O'Brien also earned a win in the "A" doubles bracket, knocking off Jacob Dornsife and Mason Spottek of Oneonta, 8-5.
After taking a week away from competition, Union will close out the fall schedule at the ITA Northeast Regionals beginning on September 30.
