Box Score MADISON, N.J. – The Union College men's tennis team competed on day one of the ITA Northeast Regional Championships on Friday at Drew University's Drew Tennis Complex, earning a pair of singles victories.
Both senior
Ioannis Binopoulos and sophomore
Ben Jacobs emerged from the first round with convincing victories. Jacobs dropped only two games in a 6-1, 6-1 win over Matthew Emery of FDU-Florham, while Binopoulos made even quicker work of Houghton College's Matt Cicero in a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
Both players ran into seeded opponents in the second round, however. Jacobs put up a great fight against #5-8 seeded Igor Visnevskjj of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, taking the first set by a 6-4 score before Visnevskjj came back to win the second set 6-1. Jacobs saved one match point down 8-9 in the supertiebreaker before falling 12-10. Binopoulos fell to #3/4 seeded Andy Zhu of RPI by a 6-0, 6-0 score.

Aidan O'Brien also put up a good fight in their first-round doubles match against Siddharth Vaada and Jimin Woo of Ithaca College, coming up just short in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-3).
This weekend marks the conclusion of Union's fall season. The team will take time off this winter in preparation for a full slate of tennis in Spring 2023, beginning in mid-February.
