BACK-TO-BACK! Union Captures Seventh Mayor's Cup in 6-0 Victory

ALBANY, N.Y. - Backed by a 28-save shutout from senior Connor Murphy and goals from six different players, the Union College men's hockey team blanked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 6-0, in the 10th annual Capital District Mayor's Cup on Saturday night in front of 5,883 fans at MVP Arena.

The win marks Union's second straight victory in the rivalry game and the second straight shutout in Albany. The six-goal margin of victory is the largest in the 10-year history of the Mayor's Cup, surpassing Union's 8-3 win in 2015. And, in a rivalry that dates back almost exactly 100 years and spans 112 games, the victory marks the first time ever that one team has posted back-to-back shutout victories thanks to Union's 6-0 win back in October.

Fourteen different players had at least one point for Union (10-14-2) on the night, as Union brings the Mayor's Cup back to Schenectady for the seventh time in 10 years. Junior Ville Immonen and first-year Carter Korpi both had a goal and an assist for two-point nights, while senior Owen Farris and junior Nic Petruolo both had a pair of helpers. In addition to Immonen and Korpi, juniors Ben Tupker and Tyler Watkins and sophomores Josh Nixon and Caden Villegas all scored for the Dutchmen.

At the other end of the ice, Murphy stopped all 28 shots that came his way to earn his second shutout of the season and fifth of his Union career, moving him into a tie with Justin Mrazek '08 for sixth on the school career shutouts list.

Union opened the scoring with a pair of goals in the first period. Petruolo sent a shot from the point that Farris redirected across the crease to a waiting Villegas, who scored over RPI's goalie Jack Watson, for the eventual game-winner. Tupker redirected a shot in front from Petruolo to make it 2-0.

The Dutchmen came out of the intermission firing and Immonen tallied his second of the season at 2:09 of the middle stanza. A short pass by junior Nathan Kelly found Immonen in the slot who beat Watson glove-side. Late in the period, Altti Nykanen was assessed a five-minute major for head contact and a game misconduct. Union capitalized 45 seconds later with a power-play goal by Watkins, for his team-leading eighth goal of the season. Watkins fired a wrister from the right circle into the top corner of the net to make it 4-0.

Union started the third period with over four minutes left on the powerplay and found paydirt again with a tally from Nixon at 2:24 of the final frame. First-year Nate Hanley took the initial shot and Nixon redirected it past Brett Miller for the score. Union added one final tally in the third period. Immonen sent a long pass up neutral ice to Korpi, who skated in on a partial breakaway to beat Miller for the final score.

Murphy made 28 saves to improve to 8-12-1 on the season. Watson made 12 saves in 40 minutes of action and falls to 9-12-1. Miller took over in the third period and made four stops.

The Dutchmen are back in action on Friday with a trip to Colgate University. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Class of 1965 Arena.
