SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Union women's hockey outshot #3/#3 Colgate 28-20 Saturday afternoon, but were unable to solve Raiders goaltender Kayle Osborne and ultimately fell, 4-0.
The story was much of the same Saturday after Union's loss to Cornell Friday. After Cornell's power-play doomed Union for three goals Friday night, Colgate went 2-for-3 on the advantage Saturday afternoon to aid their effort in getting past Union. The Big Red also scored three goals inches from the blue paint Friday evening, and the Raiders matched that tally Saturday, with all four of their goals catching junior goaltender
Sophie Matsoukas out of position trying to put out other fires.
Kaitlyn O'Donohoe opened the scoring on the 5-on-5 with less than six minutes to go in the first period. O'Donohoe took a pass from Sydney Morrow, who carried the puck from the right circle behind the net, using her speed to get to the other side and dish off the pass to O'Donohoe, who put it in the vacant net.
Colgate tallied their first power play goal 4:24 into the second, as Kristýna Kaltounková deflected home Danielle Serdachny's shot right in front of the blue paint to make it 2-0. They extended the lead nine minutes later, with Serdachny dishing to Emma Pais on a 2-on-0 to push the lead to three.
O'Donohoe's second of the afternoon would come seven minutes into the third period, firing home the rebound from the shot of Neena Brick on the advantage to provide the final score.
Union, on the contrary, would outshoot Colgate's power play, six to four, but couldn't make the most of any of their five opportunities. Union put 28 shots on Colgate's net, led by sophomore
Amanda Quan with six, compared to Colgate's 20.
Union will be back at Messa Rink next weekend, when they welcome in North Country rivals Clarkson on Friday, and St. Lawrence for the program's Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Game on Saturday. Puck drop for both games is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
