SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's hockey team dropped a 4-1 matchup to #5 Clarkson University in ECAC Hockey action on Friday afternoon at Messa Rink.
Sophomore
Riley Walsh had the lone goal of the game for Union (4-8-1, 1-3-1 ECAC Hockey), while a trio of Golden Knights - Dominique Petrie, Brooke McQuigge and Nicole Gosling – had a goal and an assist each for Clarkson (10-0-1, 3-0-0 ECAC Hockey).
Sara Swiderski opened the scoring 8:14 into the first period, receiving a faceoff win by Petrie at the blue line and sliding a shot through traffic and past junior
Sophie Matsoukas for her first goal of the season. The visitors outshot Union 9-4 in the opening 20 minutes.
Clarkson increased the lead to two near the midway point of the second period on a nice tip-in by McQuigge on the power play, but Union took back some momentum with a late tally. Sophomore
Amanda Quan chipped the puck off the boards into neutral ice toward Walsh, who tapped it past a Clarkson blueliner and went far side on Julia Minotti for her team-leading seventh tally of the season with 4:45 remaining.
The momentum gained by the Garnet Chargers was quickly extinguished less than a minute into the third period, however, with Petrie scoring just 19 seconds into the period to regain the two-goal edge. The visitors added another power-play goal later in the frame to complete the scoring.
Matsoukas finished the day with 31 saves as Clarkson posted a 35-17 edge in shots. Clarkson excelled on special teams, scoring twice on three power-play chances while killing off both Union penalties on the day, remaining perfect on the season with 42 straight kills.
Union will continue their string of nationally ranked opponents tomorrow when #6/9 St. Lawrence University comes to Messa Rink for a 3 p.m. faceoff.
