SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's swimming and diving team opened the 2023-24 season with a sweep over Division II schools Roberts Wesleyan University and the College of St. Rose on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gym Pool. The Garnet Chargers edged St. Rose 122-108 and took down Roberts Wesleyan by a 143-96 score.
The women posted 16 top-three finishes on the day, including three first-place results, to pick up their first two victories of the young season.
Junior
Kristina Valenti earned first place in the 200 individual medley, touching the wall in 2:23.98 to edge St. Rose's Mia Stroub by eight-hundredths of a second. Sophomore
Sasha Malik came away with an individual win as well, outtouching Stroub in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:04.68.
First-year
Jessica Konsky also earned a victory in her collegiate debut, winning the 100 free in a time of 58.11. She added to her strong debut with another top-two finish in the 50 free, narrowly getting edged out at the wall with a time of 26.84, just ahead of sophomore
Alison Silver in 27.05. Fellow first-year
Amelia Dino also posted a runner-up finish in the 1000 free, clocking in at 12:15.74.
The Garnet Chargers took two of the top-three spots in the 100 breast to pick up some key late-meet points, with junior
Molly Miller taking second in 1:16.14 and classmate
Meghan Seidberg finishing a half-second later in 1:16.64.
Union finished out the day with a second-place result in the 200 free relay, with the quartet of Valenti, Silver, and first-years
Sarah Ramirez and
Grace Furtado finishing in 1:49.95.
Union will look to keep the momentum going on Saturday with another home meet against Liberty League foe Clarkson University beginning at 1 p.m. at Alumni Gym Pool.
