Union Opens Weekend with 7-2 Win Over Princeton

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Seven different skaters found the back of the net as the Union College men's hockey team extended their win streak to three with a 7-2 conference win over Princeton University on Friday night at Messa Rink.

With the win, Union improves to 7-5-0 on the season and 3-2-0 in conference play.

Six skaters recorded a multi-point night. Sophomore John Prokop extended his scoring streak to seven games with a goal and two assists. Juniors Caden Villegas and Cullen Ferguson and senior Liam Robertson each scored a goal and an assist. Junior Josh Nixon and sophomore Brandon Buhr tallied a pair of helpers to round out the multi-point scoring. Seniors Chaz Smedsrud and Ben Tupker scored a goal each while junior Cole Kodsi extended his goal streak to three games.

Robertson was stellar on the faceoff, winning 17 of 23 draws.

The Union powerplay went 3-for-4 on the night while the penalty kill went 2-for-3.

Union scored two goals in the final 1:07 of the opening period to take a lead they never gave up. Robertson scored his second goal of the season with a redirection on a shot by Buhr. With only 0.3 seconds left on the board, Villegas sent a wrister from the right-wing circle to beat Princeton netminder Ethan Pearson.

Ferguson gave Union a 3-0 lead with his first goal of the season. A Princeton defender tried to clear the puck, but ended up putting it right on Ferguson's stick high in the slot and the defender sent a one-timer through traffic for the power-play tally.  The Tigers clawed back within one goal with a powerplay goal by Kai Daniells followed by a goal later in the period by Ian Murphy.

The third period was all Union as Chaz Smedsrud struck only 33 seconds in with spin move in the slot to give Union a 4-2 lead. The Garnet Chargers tacked on three goals in the final 2:18 of the game to lock int the win. Princeton pulled Pearson in favor of the extra attacker, but Tupker capitalized with a wrister from the neutral zone for his third goal of the season. With under a minute to play, Prokop registered a power-play goal and Kodsi closed out the scoring just under 40 seconds later.

Sophomore Kyle Chauvette made 27 saves to improve to 7-4-0 on the season.

Union now turns their attention to #4/5 Quinnipiac tomorrow. Puck drop is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Messa Rink. Fans are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy to the game as part of the team's toy drive in collaboration with C.O.C.O.A. House.
