Second Period Costly in Loss to #4/5 Quinnipiac

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Three goals in a span of 3:19 in the second period was the difference maker as the Union College men's hockey team fell 5-0 to #4/5 Quinnipiac University on Saturday afternoon at Messa Rink.

The Garnet Chargers held the Bobcats scoreless on the player advantage, going a perfect 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.

Union opened the first period with some jump, outshooting the Bobcats 5-1 in the first few minutes of the game. Quinnipiac battled back and capitalized on two power-play opportunities to take a 13-6 edge in shots after 20 minutes.

The Garnet Chargers successfully killed off the last 36 seconds of a penalty, including a great glove save by sophomore Kyle Chauvette as time expired. Quinnipiac's offense came alive with three goals in a span of 3:19. Christophe Fillion scored the first goal of the game at 1:11 of the middle stanza and CJ McGee tallied a goal only 38 seconds later. Sam Lipkin found the back of the net at 4:30 to close out the scoring in the second period.

Union had a brief 5-on-3 power-play opportunity early in the third period, but could not get a puck past Vinny Duplessis. The hosts pulled Chauvette in favor the extra attacker with 4:18 to play in the game, and Quinnipiac capitalized with an empty net goal from Victor Czerneckianair. McGee was called for an interference penalty with less than three minutes to play, and Union once again pulled Chauvette for the extra skater. The Bobcats scored a short-handed empty netter to take the 5-0 win.

Chauvette made 30 saves in the loss while Duplessis stopped 23 shots for the win.

Union has a short turnaround as #11 Maine comes to town on Wednesday. Puck drop from Messa Rink is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
