Men's Tennis Earns Two Titles at Home Invitational

| Box Score 2 SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's tennis team took home two of the three titles at the annual Garnet Charger Invitational, held on Saturday and Sunday at the Union Tennis Courts.

First-year Keita Fukushima had a big weekend for Union, going 4-0 in singles play to capture the "B" Singles bracket title, while also going 1-1 in the doubles bracket as well. Union's top doubles tandem of senior Dimitris Binopoulos and junior Ben Jacobs also took home the Doubles bracket title as well, going 3-0 over the two-day event.

After earning a bye in the first round, Binopoulos and Jacobs defeated Aidan Baracao and John Hill-Edgar of St. Lawrence University, 8-3, in the quarterfinals, to set up an all-Union semifinal against Fukushima and junior Austin Gregory, who defeated Hamilton College's Anson Anderson and Connor Griff by an 8-6 score. Binopoulos and Jacobs earned team bragging rights by advancing to the final with a tight 8-7 (9-7) tiebreaker victory, and then earned the title by defeating SLU's Adam Heilbronner and Ben Moolman, 8-4.

Union had plenty of success in the "B" Singles bracket, with the team earning three of the four semifinal spots and both finals berths. In addition to a pair of byes, Fukushima and classmate Shreyas Kode earned first-round wins, with Fukushima dispatching SLU's MJ Chaho, 6-3, 6-0, and Kode taking down Hamilton's Pius Lo, 6-4, 6-1. Fukushima defeated Hamilton's Neal Gupta, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4), in the quarterfinals and came back to defeat Ignacio Tran of Hamilton in a semifinal supertiebreaker, 4-6, 6-2, (10-5). Kode defeated Baracao by a 6-3, 6-4 margin and junior Ian Schunk got past David to reach the semifinals, where Kode squeaked past his teammate, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, to book a finals berth.

In a battle of Union newcomers, Fukushima came away with a pair of 6-3 sets over Kode to take the title.

Union also earned three first-round wins in the "A" Singles bracket as well. Senior Khai Ton defeated Moolman by a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 score to reach the quarterfinals, where he lost to eventual champion Connor Griff of Hamilton, 6-3, 6-4. Binopoulos started his singles bracket with a 5-7, 6-2, (10-8) comeback win over Charlie Sternberg of Hamilton before falling in a quarterfinal supertiebreaker, and the same fate befell first-year Solen Bellemare, who started the weekend by defeating SLU's Cole Hamilton, 1-6, 6-2, (10-6) before coming up just short in the quarters.

Union will begin its dual match season on Wednesday, when the team heads to Bard College for a Liberty League matchup beginning at 4 p.m.
