SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's hockey team opened the 2024 portion of the schedule with a 3-2 overtime loss to Brown University on Friday night at Messa Rink.
Junior
Thomas Richter scored his first goal of the season and sophomore
Carter Korpi tallied his second short-handed goal of the season. The sophomore trio of
Colby MacArthur,
Nick Young, and
Ethan Benz all registered assists.
Korpi's short-handed tally tonight marks Union's fifth of the season, matching the most for the program since the 2018-19 season. Korpi is the first Union player to score two short-handed goals in a season since Brett Supinski '19 scored both of Union's short-handed markers in the 2017-18 season.
A back-and-forth opening frame saw Brown with an early 11-7 lead in shots. An early goal by the Bears was recalled after video review to keep the game scoreless.
Sophomore
Kyle Chauvette kept the game scoreless with an incredible glove save on a two-on-one chance about halfway through the second stanza. A flurry of goals in the final 2:17 of the period saw Union take a 2-1 lead. Brown opened the scoring on with a power-play goal from Max Scott. Union scored 33 seconds later to tie it up. MacArthur banked the puck back to Young at the blue line. Young passed it back to MacArthur in the center of the left-wing circle, drawing Lawton Zacher out of position and setting up Richter in the right-wing circle for the one-timer. A penalty on sophomore
Cal Mell put the hosts on the penalty kill. Korpi gained possession in the neutral zone and took the puck in on a breakaway and scored his seventh of the season for the go-ahead goal.
Chauvette weathered 14 shots on goal in the final 20 minutes. Brown pulled Zacher with 1:53 remaining in favor of the extra attacker. Alex Pineau scored the game-tying goal with 26.2 seconds remaining to force overtime.
Ryan Shostak tallied the overtime winner at 2:16 of the extra frame.
Chauvette made 31 saves in the loss. Zacher stopped 17 shots in the win.
