Korpi Scores Twice in 4-0 Win Against St. Lawrence

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Junior Carter Korpi scored twice for the Union College men's hockey team and junior Kyle Chauvette made 19 saves in a 4-0 win over St. Lawrence University on Friday night at Messa Rink.

Union (7-2-1, 3-0-0 ECACH) is off to the best start in league play since the 2017-18 season when the team also won their first three games in ECAC Hockey play.

Korpi scored his fifth career short-handed goal to move into a tie with Nathan Gillies '03 for third-place in Union's Division I record book. Chauvette also moved up the record book in the win with his fifth career shutout. Chauvette is now tied with Justin Mrazek '08 and Connor Murphy '23 for sixth in Union's Division I record book.

Joining Korpi on the scoresheet was first-year Drew Sutton and senior Caden Villegas who scored a goal each. Six other Union skaters recorded an assist in the win.

Junior Colby MacArthur was stellar at center with 15 of Union's 34 wins on the dot. Sophomore Jacob Jeannette also reached double digits with 10 wins.

The start of the first period was all Union as the hosts out-shot St. Lawrence by a 15-6 margin in the first 20 minutes. The Garnet Chargers put four shots on net in the first 1:03 of the game, but all four were saved by Mason Kucenski. Union capitalized on the lone power-play opportunity in the first. Sutton skated in from the right circle and initially took a shot. The puck bounced off junior Brandon Buhr in front and Sutton tapped in the puck for his second goal of the season.

The Saints came out firing early in the second with an early power-play opportunity, but a couple of blocked shots from junior Nick Young and two saves from Chauvette kept it a one-goal game. Union made it 2-0 with a goal a few minutes later. Junior Nate Hanley sent a cross-ice pass to Villegas in the slot and the senior sent a one-timer past Kucenski for his first goal of the season.

Early in the third, Felikss Gavars put three shots on goal in a span of five seconds with two shots off the pipe and a save by Chauvette A few minutes later, Gavars was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct to put Union on the powerplay. A penalty on first-year Connor Smith a minute after the powerplay ended put the special teams back out for Union. Young forced a turnover in the defensive end and dished the puck off the boards to Korpi in the neutral zone and the winger skated in alone for the short-handed score. Kucenski went to the bench with 2:16 to go in favor of the extra attacker. The Saints put four shots on goal before Jeannette forced a turnover. Jeannette found Korpi again in the neutral zone and the junior brought it all the way to the empty net for his second goal of the game.

Chauvette moves to 7-1-1 with 19 saves. Kucenski made 29 saves in the loss, including 14 in the first period.

Union closes out the weekend series tomorrow against Clarkson University. Puck drop is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Messa Rink.
