Five-Goal Second Period Propels Union Past Harvard

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – A five-goal outburst in the second period was the difference maker as the Union College men's hockey team defeated Harvard University, 6-2, on Friday night at Messa Rink.

Union (14-14-3, 8-8-3) sits in fifth place in the conference standings with 29 points, only one back from fourth-place Clarkson. Harvard (5-17-4, 5-10-4) falls to ninth with 23 points.

Members of the 2014 championship team were in attendance for the game in honor of the 10-year anniversary of the historic championship run.

In poetic fashion, the victory over the Crimson marks the first season sweep over Harvard since the 2013-14 season.

Five Garnet Chargers registered a multi-point night in the victory. Senior Liam Robertson put together a three-point night to lead all Union skaters while senior Tyler Watkins and junior Josh Nixon registered two goals each. Senior Chaz Smedsrud registered a goal and an assist, for his tenth goal of the season while first-year DJ Hart tallied two assists for his first college multi-point game. Sophomore Colby MacArthur scored his second goal in as many games.

Union opened the scoring in the first period. Sophomore Nick Young took a shot from the slot that Smedsrud deflected in to get the scoring started.

The Garnet Chargers broke the game open in the second with five goals in the middle frame. MacArthur and Nixon scored only 22 seconds apart to give Union a 3-0 lead. Hart made a long pass from the Union end of the ice to Watkins on the far end of the neutral zone. The senior fired a shot from the top of the right-wing circle to beat Derek Mullahy, which prompted a goalie change for the Crimson. Junior Cullen Ferguson made a great backdoor pass to Nixon who sent the one-timer from the bottom of the left-wing circle for Union's fifth goal. Watkins added his second of the period with a tap-in off a pass in front from Smedsrud.

The Crimson did not go away quietly as they potted two goals in the opening minutes of the final frame. Zakary Karpa scored at 2:26 and exactly two minutes later, Michael Callow found the back of the net.

Sophomore Kyle Chauvette made 13 saves in the victory. Mullahy made 12 saves in the loss. Aku Koskenvuo made seven saves in 30:07 of relief.

Union is back in action tomorrow for the last home game of the regular season. Puck drop against Dartmouth is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Messa Rink. Fans are asked to stick around after the conclusion of the game as we honor the six members of the senior class.
