PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomores
Carter Korpi and
Nate Hanley both scored in the shootout while
Kyle Chauvette came up with two big stops as the Union College men's hockey team closed the weekend with a 4-4 tie, but a shootout win at Brown University for the extra ECAC Hockey point on Saturday night at Meehan Auditorium.
Sophomore
John Prokop extended his point streak to six games with a pair of assists to lead all Union skaters in points. Junior
Caden Villegas scored his seventh goal of the season in the second period and Hanley scored on the powerplay. Senior
Ben Tupker and sophomore
Brandon Buhr both scored extra-attacker goals.
Union (12-12-2, 6-6-2) won the faceoff battle 42-26 and outshot Brown (8-12-2, 6-8-1) 42-21.
Union went 1-for-3 on the powerplay while Brown went 1-for-4 on the player advantage.
Brown opened the scoring at 14:24 of the first period. A shot by Ryan Bottrill initially bounced off of sophomore
Kyle Chauvette's shoulder before rebounding off of Nick Traggio and into the net.
The Bears took a two-goal lead in the second period. On the powerplay, Mike Cataldo cashed in on a rebound from Ethan Mistry. Union made it a one-goal game at 17:59. Messina took a shot from high in the slot and Villegas buried the rebound.
The third period saw four total goals scored and 23 shots on goal by the Garnet Chargers. Brown regained a two-goal lead only 34 seconds in regulation with a goal from Ryan Bottrill. In a game that featured four video reviews, Union was the beneficiary at 10:18 of the third period. On the powerplay, junior
Josh Nixon took a shot from the doorstep and Hanley slipped the puck past Lawton Zacher. Brown scored their fourth and final goal of the game at 13:32 from Tyler Kopff. Chauvette went to the bench in favor of the extra attacker with just under five minutes to play and Tupker capitalized almost immediately. Senior
Nathan Kelly took a shot from the point and Tupker backhanded the shot past Zacher. Buhr scored the equalizer with 58.1 seconds to play to force overtime.
Union sustained the pressure from the third period into overtime, keeping the puck in Brown's end of the ice and not allowing the Bears to get a shot on goal.
Chauvette made 21 saves while Zacher stopped 42 shots.
Union is back in action on Friday for their Mental Health Awareness game. Puck drop against Colgate University is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Messa Rink.
