Robertson's Hat Trick Lifts Union to Home Win Over Colgate

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Senior Liam Robertson tallied his first career hat trick and the program's first in almost seven years to pace the Union College men's hockey team to a 5-3 win over Colgate University (11-13-3, 8-6-1) on Friday night at Messa Rink.

Union's last hat trick came at the hands of Spencer Foo on February 11, 2017, an 8-3 win at Dartmouth College. The last hat trick on home ice was on November 4, 2016 when Mike Vecchione scored three times in a 5-3 win over #16 Yale University. The win over Colgate on home ice is also the first since March 9, 2019.

With the win, Union (13-12-2, 7-6-2) stays in fifth in the conference standings with 25 points.

Union went 2-for-4 on the powerplay and a perfect 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.

Sophomores Nate Hanley and Carter Korpi each tallied a goal in the win. Senior Ben Tupker and junior Cullen Ferguson registered multi-point nights with two assists each.

Colgate jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 3:54 in the first period. A turnover in the defensive end saw Jake Schneider score for the visitors. Union responded in a big way later in the period with three goals in 98 seconds. Robertson opened the flurry with a power-play tally at 13:30 after collecting the rebound from junior Cullen Ferguson's shot for the score. Only 14 seconds later, the hosts struck again as Korpi fired a wrister from just outside the left circle to give Union a one-goal lead. Hanley joined the scoring frenzy at 15:08 with a redirection in front off of first-year Joey Potter's shot from the point.

Union pushed the lead to three goals with a power-play goal in the second period. Sophomore Colby MacArthur took a shot from the center of the right circle that bounced off of Carter Gylander's pads and onto sophomore Brandon Buhr's stick. Buhr sent a quick pass across the crease to Robertson for the score.

Colgate climbed back in the third period by scoring two goals in a span of 15 seconds. The Raiders pulled Gylander in favor of the extra attacker in the final few minutes of the period. After beating out a potential icing, Robertson tapped home the empty net goal for the hat trick.

Sophomore Kyle Chauvette made 32 saves in the win, including 16 stops in the second period. Gylander made 22 saves in the loss.

Union closes out the weekend tomorrow with a game against #12/13 Cornell University. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Messa Rink.
