Arizpe-Sierra and Alexis Claim Weekly Conference Honors

TROY, N.Y. – The Union College women's tennis team earned a pair of weekly awards from the Liberty League to finish the regular season, as first-year Luisa Arizpe-Sierra was named the conference Singles Performer of the Week and she teamed with sophomore Kennedy Alexis to earn Doubles Team of the Week honors as well.

Arizpe-Sierra earns her second individual honor of the 2023-24 season after previously earning Rookie of the Week honors at the start of April.

The first-year went 2-0 in singles play last week at the second flight to extend her personal winning streak to four matches. After sitting out Monday's sweep of SUNY Oneonta, she knocked off Grace Truong of #38 Skidmore College in a supertiebreaker 6-0, 4-6, (10-7) on Friday and came back the next day with a strong 6-1, 6-1 win over Maya Clinard of Rochester Institute of Technology.

Arizpe-Sierra enters the postseason with a team-best 16-7 singles record, including a 7-1 mark in Liberty League play.

Alexis and Arizpe-Sierra are honored for the second time this season in doubles play after a 3-0 week on the courts to close out the regular season. The pair moved up to the top flight for the first match of the week, taking down Julia Holtermann and Brianna Shaw of SUNY Oneonta by an 8-4 score on Monday. Moving back down to their customary second-doubles spot for the weekend, the tandem knocked off Skidmore's Beilynn Geiss and Katie Wong on Friday, 8-5, before defeating RIT's Jackie Drozd and Abby Murray by an 8-3 margin on Saturday.

On the season, Alexis and Arizpe-Sierra are 10-9 playing mostly at the second flight, tied for the most doubles wins by a Union tandem this season.

Union, which broke the school record for wins in a season against RIT, will enter the Liberty League Tournament as the fifth seed and will take on fourth-seeded St. Lawrence University in the first round on Friday at 2:15 p.m. in Ithaca, N.Y.
