Men's Hockey Earns Shootout Win Over Yale

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie over Yale University on Friday night, but juniors Nate Hanley and Brandon Buhr each scored in the shootout to give the Garnet Chargers two key ECAC Hockey points on Friday night at Messa Rink.

The game will formally go down as a 3-3 tie, but Union (14-9-2, 7-5-1 ECACH) earns two key points heading into the final full month of the regular season.

Union went 0-for-1 on the powerplay while Yale went 1-for-4 with the player advantage.

Yale struck first in the contest with a goal at 3:04 and extended the lead to two with a power-play tally at 12:20 of the opening period. Union battled back with a goal from first-year Drew Sutton 43 seconds later with a shot from the right circle for his third goal of the season. Junior Nate Hanley tied the game at two apiece with his second goal in as many games. Hanley forced a turnover in the neutral zone and sent a wrister past Yale netminder Jack Stark.

Union had plenty of opportunities to tie it up in the second period with 11 total shots on goal. The Garnet Chargers had a flurry of activity out of the media timeout, but the Bulldogs had an answer. Ronan O'Donnell scored the go-ahead goal for Yale. A late penalty on junior John Prokop saw the penalty kill carry over into the third period.

Less than two minutes after the penalty expired, Union scored the equalizer. Senior Caden Villegas made a pass near the blue line to Ferguson at the bottom of the left circle and the captain buried the puck with the wrister. Union continued the momentum after the goal with two shots ringing off the pipe, but Stark held on and stopped 15 shots in the third period.

The overtime frame was a back-and-forth battle with both teams getting opportunities to score. Both goaltenders hung on to force the shootout.

Junior Kyle Chauvette stopped 22 shots for Union while Stark made 36 saves for Yale.

Union closes out the weekend tomorrow with a game against Brown University. Puck drop is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Messa Rink.
