Union Earns 2-1 Win Over Brown

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's hockey team extended their unbeaten streak to four straight games with a 2-1 win over Brown University on Saturday night at Messa Rink.

Union's penalty kill was stellar with a perfect 8-for-8 effort on the night. On the power-play, the Garnet Chargers went 1-for-4.

With the win, Union (15-9-2, 8-5-1 ECACH) jumped into third place in the ECAC Hockey standings with 26 points.

Union had a strong start to the game in terms of puck possession with four shots on goal and four that went wide in the opening 11 minutes of the period. Senior Caden Villegas opened the scoring at 13:21 of the first period. Junior Colby MacArthur took a shot from the right circle and Villegas skated in front with his back to the net and deflected the puck off the pipe for the score.

The second period saw both teams trading penalties early on. Zachary Tonelli went to the box at 9:36 of the middle stanza for a tripping penalty. The Garnet Chargers only needed 58 second to score the eventual game-winning tally. Senior Cullen Ferguson took a shot from the point into traffic. First-year Lucas Buzziol dove on the loose puck, pushing it out to Buhr on the doorstep for his 13th goal of the season.

The Bears came out firing in the third period and had an opportunity with a 5-on-3 advantage before the Union penalty kill shut the door. Charlie Golloub went to the box for boarding at 9:57. Brown capitalized with a short-handed goal to cut the game to one goal. Brown tried to take advantage of a potential 6-on-4 situation later in the period after junior Nick Young went to the penalty box. Brown pulled netminder Tyler Shea, but Union held on for the win.

Chauvette earned his 14th win of the season with 25 saves, including 12 in the first period. Shea stopped 24 shots in the loss.

Union is on the road next weekend with a trip to Colgate on Friday night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Class of 1965 Arena.
