NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Union College men's hockey team completed the weekend sweep with a 4-3 win over Yale University on Saturday night at Ingalls Rink.
For the first time since the 2017-18 season, Union (11-7-1, 6-5-0 ECACH) swept the trip at Brown and Yale. Union defeated Brown last night with a 3-1 win. The weekend sweep also marks the first ECAC Hockey road sweep of the season.
The cousin tandem of senior
Josh Nixon and first-year
Lucas Buzziol combined for three of Union's four goals against the Bulldogs. Senior
Caden Villegas scored the game-winner and added an assist for a two-point night. Juniors
Colby MacArthur and
Parker Lindauer also had multi-point nights with two assists each.
In the win, several Union skaters extended their point streaks. MacArthur capped off a four-point weekend (0-4-4) to extend his streak to four games while junior
John Prokop and senior
Caden Villegas also reached the four-game mark. Buzziol and classmate
Riley Brueck both extended their point streaks to three games.
"I thought in the first period we were the better team," said head coach
Josh Hauge. "In the second they were the better team. It came down to which team was better in the third. I'll take us against anyone plus or minus one goal going into the third."
The early minutes were all Yale before back-to-back faceoff wins for the Garnet Chargers shifted momentum to the visitors. Sophomore
DJ Hart fired a shot from the point and Buzziol redirected the puck in front for his second goal of the weekend to give Union a 1-0 lead. Union made it a two-goal game at 15:24 when Nixon scored his first of the contest. Villegas took a shot from the bottom of the right circle and collected his own rebound, throwing the puck back on net. MacArthur attempted a shot of his own from the doorstep, but it was Nixon who jammed the loose puck home. Yale responded just over two minutes later with a goal from Tucker Hartmann to make it a one-goal game going into the second period.
The Bulldogs stormed back in the middle frame with two goals. David Chen sent a wrister from the left circle that slipped past junior
Kyle Chauvette to tie the game. Yale extended the lead a few minutes later with a goal from Kalen Szeto.
Nixon scored his second goal of the game at 11:41 of the third period. Bayard Hall was assessed a two minute minor for interference to put the Garnet Chargers on the powerplay. A short pass from MacArthur from the left wall to Lindauer behind the net set up the goal. Lindauer found Nixon on the doorstep and the senior fired it past Luke Pearson for the equalizer. A string of penalties late in the third made it 4-on-four with less than two minutes to play. Prokop fired a shot from the point and Villegas attempted to redirect the puck in front, but the shot was blocked. Villegas picked up the loose puck and sent it through traffic for the game-winning goal.
Chauvette made 18 saves to pick up his 11
th win of the season. Pearson made 31 saves in the loss.
Union continues the road trip next weekend with a trip to the North Country. The Garnet Chargers play Clarkson University on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Cheel Arena.
