Men's Hockey Succumbs to Clarkson in 5-1 Loss

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Clarkson University scored the final five goals of the game to hand the Union College men's hockey team a 5-1 defeat in ECAC Hockey action on Friday night at the M&T Bank Center.

Sophomore Ben Muthersbaugh scored the lone goal of the game for Union (5-2-1, 1-2-0 ECAC Hockey), while Talon Sigurdson had a pair of goals to lead Clarkson (4-5-0, 1-0-0 ECAC Hockey) in its conference opener.

Union got off to an excellent start on the evening, holding the Golden Knights without a shot for over nine minutes and getting the game's first goal just 2:11 into the contest. Muthersbaugh potted his second of the year by picking the top corner with a wrist shot from the right circle, with assists going to senior Cal Mell and first-year Alex Laurenza.

Clarkson's first shot of the game came at the 9:25 mark on a power play, as the Garnet Chargers controlled play at the outset. Despite that, however, the visitors scored twice in 2:01 later in the period to take the lead on goals by Sigurdson and Ty Brassington.

Union continued to have the better of the shot totals in the second and third periods, but the combination of Clarkson netminder Shane Soderwall and an opportunistic Clarkson offense did not allow the Garnet Chargers back in the game. After the home team did not score on a five-on-three and subsequent five-on-four advantage early in the second, the visitors found the net twice in just over three minutes to balloon the lead to three, and Clarkson added an empty-netter with 2:36 left in the third to ice the game.

Union finished the game outshooting Clarkson 40-17, but Soderwall made 39 saves to earn the win while sophomore Cameron Korpi allowed four goals on 16 shots at the other end. The Garnet Chargers went 0-for-4 on the power play and also could not convert on a penalty shot late in the third period as well.

The Garnet Chargers look to shake off the loss tomorrow night when the team battles St. Lawrence University beginning at 7 p.m. at M&T Bank Center.
