Men's Hockey Bounces Back at Home

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Union College men's hockey first-year Brayden Gillespie recorded his first collegiate win and seniors Colby MacArthur and Nate Hanley scored their first goals of the season in the Garnet Chargers' 5-2 victory over St. Lawrence University on Saturday night at M&T Bank Center.

Gillespie made his debut for the Garnet & White after three season in the OHL with the Guelph Storm and Brampton Steelheads. The Oakville, Ont. native made 27 saves and helped get Union (6-2-1, 2-2-0 ECACH) back on track against St. Lawrence (2-7-1, 1-1-0 ECACH) after Friday's loss to Clarkson. The Garnet Chargers are now 2-0 this season coming off a loss, and it is their 10th-such victory since the beginning of the 2024-25 campaign.

The Garnet Chargers were being outshot through most of the first period, but seven Union attempts in the final five minutes meant they kept their season-long streak of not being outshot in a period alive. Two of those shots found the back of the net, beginning with Hanley's breakaway score at the 16:22 mark. Senior Cal Mell poked the puck away in Union's defensive zone, then sophomore Lucas Buzziol picked it up and found Hanley for the score.

Just over two minutes later, senior Parker Lindauer won a battle behind the net and combined with senior Brandon Buhr to assist on MacArthur's first of the game. MacArthur finished the night with two scores, both assisted by Lindauer and Buhr, and registered the third multi-goal game of his career.

Buhr added a goal to his two-assist night and boosted his multi-point game total to 18. He scored at the 11:57 mark of the second period on the power play. Union is undefeated (6-0-0) when Buhr scores at least one point this season.

With 2:13 left in the game, St. Lawrence pulled its goaltender and was able to pull within two of Union with less than a minute to play. However, sophomore Riley Brueck took advantage of the empty net 19 seconds later to put the game away.

Gillespie stopped five Saints shots in the third period, and the only other goal he allowed bounced off both the crossbar and right post and had to be confirmed by video review to determine it crossed the goal line.

The Garnet Chargers put conference action on hold next week as they host UMass Lowell and New Hampshire at M&T Bank Center on Friday, Nov. 14 and Saturday, Nov. 15, respectively.
