Special Teams Costly in Loss to #14/15 Quinnipiac

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Special teams was the difference maker for the Union College men's hockey team in a 7-2 loss to #14/15 Quinnipiac University on Friday night at Messa Rink.

The Bobcats went 5-for-6 on the powerplay and scored a short-handed goal. Union went 0-for-5 on the player advantage.

Junior Colby MacArthur led the way for Union with a goal and an assist. Classmate John Prokop scored his eighth goal of the season.

Union came out firing in the first, outshooting Quinnipiac 5-0 through the opening minutes. A penalty on first-year Lucas Buzziol put the Bobcats on the player advantage and the Bobcats capitalized quickly. A shot by Chris Pelosi was tipped in front by Jack Ricketts to give Quinnipiac a one-goal lead.

The Garnet Chargers battled back with two goals in the middle period to take the lead. Senior Josh Nixon fired a shot on Dylan Silverstein, but the Quinnipiac netminder made a pad save. MacArthur picked up the rebound and buried it to tie the game at one. Just over three minutes later, Prokop scored to give Union a one-goal lead. Prokop raced in from the right circle and took a shot on Silverstein that was saved. The blueliner picked up his own rebound and sent it home for the score. Quinnipiac tied the game up with a power-play goal at 14:28. A shot by Travis Treloar hit the pipe and Andon Cerbone cashed in the rebound. Ricketts struck again on the powerplay for the eventual game winning goal with 1:20 to play in the second.

Despite starting the period on the powerplay, Union could not capitalize on the opportunity. Two penalties 11 seconds apart later in the period put Union on a 5-on-3 advantage, but a penalty on MacArthur 45 seconds later put the team on a 4-on-3 advantage instead. Victor Czerneckianair won the first faceoff after the MacArthur penalty and scored immediately. The Bobcats added two more power-play goals in the period and an empty net goal to take a 7-2 win.

Junior Kyle Chauvette made 21 saves in the loss. Silverstein stopped 18 shots in the win.

Union hosts Princeton University tomorrow to close out the weekend. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Messa Rink.
