Union Athletes Earn Five Weekly Honors; Four More Named to Honor Roll

TROY, N.Y. –  Five Union College student-athletes across four sports earned weekly recognition from the Liberty League and four others were named to the weekly honor rolls for the week ending on March 30, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon.

Women's Golf Performer of the Week: Iyene Essien
Essien took first place at the Saint Anselm Florida Invitational last week, carding back-to-back four-over rounds of 77 to finish at 154. Her two rounds included the only eagle of the tournament and she also led the field with 21 pars in 36 holes, while her two-under cumulative score on the par-fives was the best among all golfers.

Men's Outdoor Track & Field Track Performer of the Week: Sam Ahern
Ahern took second place in the 100-meter dash and first in the 200-meter dash to lead the Garnet Chargers at the College of William & Mary's Dan Stimson Invitational. He ran the best 100 of his career on Saturday with a finish of 10.80 seconds, one-tenth of a second off the program standard. He also ran the 200 in 21.70 seconds, seven-hundredths off of his own program record. He qualified for both the Conference and AARTFC Championships in both events to start the year.

Men's Tennis Doubles Team of the Week: Austin Gregory and Vivaan Gupta
Gregory and Gupta won all three of their doubles matches together on Spring Break last week. The pair played one match at first doubles and defeated Lawrence University's Benjamin Hoppe and Andrew Larson by a 6-3 score. The tandem also lost only two total games in their two third-doubles matches, defeating pairings from #34 Hamilton College and Oberlin College by the same 6-1 score.

Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week: Vivaan Gupta
Gupta went 5-1 in four matches for Union on Spring Break last week, winning both singles matches and 3-of-4 doubles matches. He started his week with a shortened 2-6, 4-3 (ret.) win at third singles against Freed-Hardeman University, then dominated his opponent from Lawrence in a 6-0, 6-0 second-singles win. He was a double-winner versus Lawrence after a 6-3 first-doubles triumph, and also earned 6-1 third-doubles victories over tandems from #34 Hamilton and Oberlin.

Women's Outdoor Track & Field Rookie of the Week: Kyleigh Record
Record got her outdoor season off to a good start at the Dan Stimson Invitational, finishing the 800 meters in 2:18.05 to place sixth overall and qualify her for both the Liberty League and AARTFC Outdoor Championships.

Honor Roll Mentions:

Baseball: AJ Cutler, Chris Suter
Cutler started all six games, hitting .400 (10 of 25) with a .444 on-base percentage, chipping in a triple, seven RBIs, two walks and two runs scored. He had at least one hit in 5-of-6 games, including four multi-hit outings. His two-run triple provided the winning runs in a 3-2 victory in game one against Vassar College on Friday, and he drove in both Garnet Charger runs in Saturday's game three. He also had a pair of hits and drove in the first two runs of the game in a 6-3 win over Williams College. Suter tossed a complete-game eight-hitter in Union's conference opener on Friday at Vassar, allowing two runs and striking out five in a 3-2 victory. Only two runners reached third base over the nine innings as the senior improved to 5-0 on the season.

Women's Lacrosse: Greta Maurer
Maurer had a huge game in Union's 12-10 win over #18 Ithaca College on Saturday, scoring four goals on four shots with two assists for six points while also controlling five draws and grabbing a pair of ground balls. Her final point of the game was an assist on the game-winning goal with 10:30 left in the fourth quarter. The senior also recorded one assist and three ground balls in limited action during Union's 18-5 win over Bard College on Wednesday.

Women's Tennis: Chara Meidani
Meidani went 2-1 at first singles to finish off the team's week on Spring Break. She bookended the week with a 6-2, 7-5 win over George Fox University and a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Augustana College, dropping only a 6-2, 6-2 matchup to her opponent from #28 Carleton College.
