SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Six members of the Union College men's hockey and men's lacrosse teams were recognized for their work in competition and in the classroom with spots on the 2026 CSC Academic All-District Men's At-Large Team, selected by College Sports Communicators and announced on Tuesday.
Senior
Brandon Buhr of the men's hockey team picked up Division I At-Large recognition, while men's lacrosse seniors
Walker Popko and
Chris Weitzel were joined by juniors
Jack Lucey and
Kyle Goodwin and sophomore
Luke Foster in earning Division III At-Large laurels. In addition,
Buhr, Lucey and
Popko were selected as CSC Academic All-America finalists and will advance to the national ballots, the results of which will be announced next month.
Unlike most sport-specific categories, the At-Large program is arguably the most competitive Academic All-District program, encompassing 10 different men's sports: fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
To be nominated for College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors, student-athletes must reach a minimum participation threshold (varies by sport), maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher, and reach sophomore athletic and academic standing at the school. All Academic All-District honorees are considered for advancement to the CSC Academic All-America ballot.
Buhr was named Union's Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year and team Most Valuable Player after leading the men's hockey team in goals (19) and assists (17). The economics major was the runner up for ECAC Hockey's Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and was named the recipient of the Thomas Van Arden Dukehart Academic Award, presented to the men's hockey player with the highest grade point average, for the third straight year. He signed a professional contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs in March and has had two assists in five games with the AHL's Toronto Marlies.
Popko earned honorable mention All-America honors from both the
USILA and
USA Lacrosse Magazine after an excellent senior season for the Garnet Chargers, scoring 49 goals with 18 assists for 67 points. He finished the conference tournament first in the Liberty League in goals and third in points, and ended the year fourth on Union's single-season goal scoring list in 2026. In two seasons in Schenectady, the science, technology and society major scored 83 goals with 26 assists for 109 points.
Lucey picked up
USILA All-America honorable mention and All-ECAC recognition at short-stick midfield in 2026. The managerial economics major set new career highs with 41 ground balls and 17 caused turnovers as a key member of the
faceoff unit. He will enter this senior year with 95 ground balls and 39 caused turnovers to his credit, in addition to three goals and seven assists.
Weitzel stepped into a full-time starting role and earned All-Liberty League second-team honors after picking up 37 ground balls and causing 25 turnovers to rank second on the team among defenders in both categories. After playing in four games over his first two years, the biology major started 30-of-32 games over his last two seasons and accumulated 53 ground balls and 30 caused turnovers.
Foster was named a
USA Lacrosse Magazine All-America honorable mention as part of the Union defensive unit, registering a team-leading 28 caused turnovers to rank sixth in the Liberty League while also grabbing 46 ground balls, third-best on the team and first among Union defenders. The mechanical engineering major had at least one grounder and one caused turnover in each of the season's final 10 games.
Goodwin also was a key starter on defense for the Garnet Chargers as a junior, ranking fourth on the team with 44 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers. In two seasons in Schenectady, the political science and Russian and East European studies double major has picked up 62 ground balls and caused 18 turnovers.
With the six honorees, Union student-athletes have now earned 326 Academic All-District honors since 2001.
