TROY, N.Y. – Union College student-athletes combined to earn four weekly honors from the Liberty League and six more athletes were named to the weekly honor rolls for the week ending on April 20, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon.
Women's Lacrosse Defensive Performer of the Week: Anna Dembowski
Dembowski led a Union defense that allowed only 13 goals in a pair of key conference victories, snatching up 15 ground balls and causing four turnovers while also adding an assist. She started the weekend with six grounders and a pair of caused turnovers in a 10-7 win at Clarkson University on Friday, including a trio of GBs in the fourth quarter to preserve the lead. The sophomore added a career-high nine ground balls and two caused turnovers in Saturday's 13-6 win at St. Lawrence University, including picking up a rebound and taking it the length of the field before dishing off for a goal to record her first collegiate point in the third period.
Men's Tennis Doubles Team of the Week: Ben Jacobs and
Jesus Sosa
In Union's only match of the week, Jacobs and Sosa earned a win for Union at first doubles against #69 Vassar College on Saturday, outlasting Fernando Bauermeister and Eugene Lee by a 7-5 score.
Baseball Rookie of the Week: Dylan Swarts
Swarts had a big week at the plate and on the hill for Union. At the plate, the first-year hit .500 (11 for 22) with a .560 on-base percentage and .773 slugging percentage thanks to a homer, three doubles and two walks to go with six runs scored and eight runs batted in. On the mound, he went 1-0 and allowed three earned runs in six innings over two appearances. His best game of the week came in Saturday's 12-1 game-two victory over Skidmore College, where he went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored while also tossing four shutout innings and allowing only three hits to earn the victory. He also had a career-best four hits and drove in three runs in game one of the weekend series with the division-leading Thoroughbreds on Friday afternoon and had at least one hit in all five games.
Women's Golf Co-Rookie of the Week: Iyene Essien
Essien was honored for the second straight week after tying for second place in Friday's dual match with St. Lawrence with a round of 80. The first-year battled through an opening nine 42, then used five pars and a birdie on the par-three 17th to come in with a 38 to post her sixth top-five finish in seven events this season.

Women's Golf: Shea White
White led the way for Union in a dual match against St. Lawrence by tying the lowest round of her career with a 79 to earn a one-stroke victory over four players. The junior made six pars and three bogeys to go out in a very steady 39, then started the back nine with a birdie on the par-four 10th. Three bogeys and one double the rest of the way allowed her to come away with her first career individual win.
Men's Lacrosse: Walker Popko
Popko recorded back-to-back four-goal games and added six ground balls for Union last week. The junior led all players with a game-high five points on Wednesday at Skidmore, scoring four times with an assist for five points. He followed with four goals and four ground balls in a 16-11 comeback win over Vassar on Saturday, including three tallies during the team's game-changing 8-0 run in the second and third quarters.
Women's Lacrosse: Gillian Joseph
Joseph recorded six goals and three assists for nine points in two conference victories for Union over the weekend. The sophomore started the weekend with a goal and two assists in a low-scoring 10-7 win at Clarkson on Friday, assisting on the eventual game-winner late in the third period. She added five goals and an assist for six points in a 13-6 victory over St. Lawrence on Saturday, scoring three times during a key 4-0 run between the second and third periods that build up a seven-goal edge.
Women's Crew: Second Varsity 4+
Union's second varsity 4+ took top honors at the New York State Championships on Saturday. The quintet of first-year

Amy Gagliardi and
Olivia Werkema battled both a pouring rain and three other crews to take home the title with a time of 8:22.5, defeating Colgate University by five seconds and Marist College by over 10 seconds.
Men's Tennis: Ben Jacobs
Jacobs came back from a set down to defeat #69 Vassar's Joseph Braun at third singles on Saturday. After dropping a 7-6 (6-3) first set, Jacobs came back to win the second by a 6-3 margin and then fought off three match points in the supertiebreaker before emerging with a 14-12 marathon win.
Women's Outdoor Track & Field: Cat Dacey
Dacey highlighted the day for Union at the Trinity (Conn.) College Invitational by shattering her own school record in the 800 meters, taking nearly 1.5 seconds off her previous standard with a time of 2:15.63 to finish first out of 46 runners.
