Men's Hockey Drops Matchup With Yale

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Yale University defeated the Union College men's hockey team 4-1 at M&T Bank Center on Saturday evening.

Sophomore Ben Muthersbaugh struck first for the Garnet Chargers (14-7-2, 5-6-1 ECAC Hockey), but Yale (7-11-0, 6-6-0) went on to score four unanswered and spoiled Union's attempt at a weekend sweep.

At 17:22 in the first period, Iisai Pesonen was ejected after hitting sophomore Connor Smith from behind. The Garnet Chargers generated two chances on the five-minute power play, the second of which came in the form of a one-timer from Muthersbaugh. He delivered his third power-play goal of the season, assisted by sophomore Will Felicio and first-year Etienne Lessard.

Yale broke through to tie the game up 1-1 on an odd-man rush midway through the second period. Yale's Will Richter beat first-year Brayden Gillespie, snapping a 90+ minute shutout streak for the rookie goaltender.

After the Bulldogs took a lead 4:38 into the third period, Union earned its fifth power-play chance of the game, looking to retie the score. However, Yale outshot Union over those two minutes and killed off the too many men penalty.

Gillespie made 28 saves on the night, marking his second-most in a Garnet Charger uniform. He made four saves while Yale was a man up and three stops against Bulldog penalty killers.

Gillespie took off for the bench for the first time with 2:55 left in the third period, but Union was only able to attempt one shot before Yale potted its first of two empty-netters.

Union only has one day off before regrouping in Cambridge, Mass. on Monday, Jan. 19 at 4 p.m. against Harvard.
