Swimming & Diving Celebrates Senior Day

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's and women's swimming & diving teams celebrated Senior Day on Saturday at Alumni Gym Pool as the men defeated Vassar College 153-130, and the women fell to the Brewers 151-93.

Seniors Drew Hill, Josh Hiller, and Benjamin Sperling were recognized on the men's side, and senior Alison Silver was celebrated as the only senior on the women's team.

Hill showed out on his Senior Day, winning all four of his events. He led off the winning 200 medley relay along with first-year Troy Luley, sophomore Brayden Green, and first-year Tripp Kennedy (1:38.86). Then he won the 100 butterfly (51.78) and was on the winning 200 freestyle relay with Sperling, junior Gavin Baltes, and Kennedy. He also posted a lifetime-best time while championing the 100 backstroke (54.22).

Sperling secured a season-best in the 50 freestyle (23.23), and Hiller earned his fastest 100 freestyle time of the year, going 52.46.

Silver joined Hill with a lifetime-best of her own on Senior Day, winning the 200 individual medley (2:26.81).

The men's team won nine events overall during its 23-point win over Vassar. Kennedy and Luley were two of Union's three swimmers to win all four of their events, along with Hill. Kennedy was on both winning relays, won the 200 freestyle (1:48.06), and touched the wall in 4:49.78 for a lifetime-best in the 500 freestyle. His 500-free time is the fastest by any Union swimmer in the event by over 5.09 seconds this season.

Only one of Luley's event victories came in a relay. He won the 100 breaststroke (59.10), the 200 breaststroke (2:09.94), and the 200 IM (2:03.64).

The men posted six lifetime-best swims on the day, including Baltes in the 500 free (5:03.43), first-year Nathan Lowney in the 200 backstroke (2:11.39), sophomore Crosby Grim in the 200 free (2:00.44), and sophomore Myles Gronbach in the 200 back (2:26.73).

Junior Cole Pierson and sophomore Finn Weafer traded victories in the 1-meter diving and 3-meter diving competitions, with Weafer winning the former, and Pierson winning the latter.

Along with Silver's first-place finish in the 200 IM, the women won three events for Union. First-year Ali Sweeney won the 200 breast (2:38.67), and junior Jess Konsky, first-year Julia Garber, junior Chloe Matthews, and first-year Lucia Lazarus capped off the meet with a 1:47.61 and first-place finish in the 200 free relay.

The women posted five lifetime-best swims, led by first-year Mya Schattin in the 100 breast (1:26.32) and the 200 IM (2:31.38). Garber clocked her fastest 50 free time (26.29), and first-year Cate Kavanaugh went 12:08.84 in the 1,000 free.

The Garnet Chargers wrap up the regular season on Friday, Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. against New Paltz at home.
