Field Hockey Eases Past St. Lawrence in 3-1 Win

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College field hockey team finished a busy week with a third straight victory, easing past St. Lawrence University in a 3-1 Liberty League victory on Sunday afternoon at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.

First-year Caroline Ranucci played a role in all three Garnet Charger goals with a tally and two assists for four points, while senior Maddie Greco scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season and junior Rowan Dapson found the net as well for Union (7-3, 2-1 Liberty League).

The home team controlled play for much of the afternoon, outshooting St. Lawrence (4-6, 0-3 Liberty League) by a 23-7 margin and amassing a huge 22-4 edge in penalty corners.

It took Union only 75 seconds to get on the scoreboard, as Greco tipped home a Ranucci shot on a penalty corner to put the Garnet Chargers ahead for good. The home team added another goal on a penalty corner with 3:29 left in the second stanza, with Ranucci firing a low rocket into the net for her third goal of the weekend. Union had 14 shots and 15 penalty corners over the first 30 minutes to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.

The Garnet Chargers took only one shot in the third quarter, with the only goal coming from SLU's Sawyer Bailey in the final half minute.

The home team reasserted itself in the final frame, outshooting the Saints by an 8-1 margin and taking six penalty corners. Union earned an insurance goal off a corner with less than two minutes left, when Dapson found the net through traffic.

First-year Ellie Skolnekovich earned her first collegiate start in goal and picked up the win, making four saves and helped out by a defensive save by senior Amelia Stevens in the second quarter as well. Stella Gizzi made nine saves in goal for the Saints.

Union will take on its fourth nationally ranked opponent of the year on Wednesday with a 6 p.m. match at Wesleyan University.
