SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Sophomore
Cameron Korpi made 28 saves, and his classmate
Ben Muthersbaugh scored twice to propel the Union College men's hockey team to a 4-1 victory over #9/10 Cornell University on Saturday night, securing the Garnet Chargers' first ECAC Hockey weekend sweep of the season.
Union's pair of conference wins and third win over a ranked opponent came at an opportune time, moving the Garnet Chargers (18-10-2, 8-9-1 ECAC Hockey) into sixth place of the league standings. Cornell (17-7-1, 12-5-1 ECAC Hockey) is in a tie for second after suffering its largest margin of defeat since Jan. 17 (L, 4-1 vs Quinnipiac).
Union hung four goals on the Big Red, becoming only the fifth team to score three or more times against them this season. Cornell entered the weekend as the toughest team to score on in the country, averaging 1.91 goals-against per game. Union racked up 36 shots, marking the most chances Cornell has allowed this season.
Muthersbaugh scored more goals against Cornell Saturday night than 10 other teams have been able to this season. He found the back of the net twice in a span of 1:42 between the end of the first and the start of the second. However, neither goal came from his favorite spot atop the right circle. First, he corralled a pass in the slot with his back to the net, turned, and fired for the opening score. Early in the second, he converted on a wide-open net after Alexis Cournoyer could not recover in time following a shot from sophomore Will Felicio. Muthersbaugh has five goals over a three-game span for the second time in his career. He had a hat trick against Mercyhurst on Oct. 18, 2024 and later scored twice against Rensselaer on Oct. 25, 2024, eventually earning the Hockey Commissioners Association's Rookie of the Month award.
Cournoyer, the ECAC Hockey Goalie of the Month in January and three-time Rookie of the Month winner, was pulled midway through the second period after allowing his third goal of the game. Senior Nate Hanley picked the pocket of a Big Red skater trying to escape the Union zone and sniped over Cournoyer's shoulder to knock the first-year netminder out of the game.
After Charlie Major ended Korpi's search for a fourth shutout at 17:21 with an extra skater, senior Parker Lindauer put his squad back up by three on an empty netter with 27 seconds left in regulation. Union is now averaging 3.2 goals per game against Cornell in the last five meetings and is 4-1 in those games.
Korpi notched his 11th win on the season and his most saves in a game since making 30 against Colgate on Nov. 22. The Garnet Chargers also killed off a pair of penalties, totaling their 20th game without allowing a power-play goal.
Union remains in Schenectady for its next two games beginning with a matchup against Harvard University on Friday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m.
