Men's Hockey Wins Third Straight Home Game

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's hockey team won its third game in a row Friday night, treating a sellout crowd at M&T Bank Center to a 4-1 victory over Harvard University.

Junior Jacob Jeannette scored twice with first-year Troy Pelton assisting on both scores, and sophomore Cameron Korpi made a season-high 34 saves for his third consecutive win in the crease for Union (19-10-2, 9-9-1 ECAC Hockey).

With the win over Harvard (13-12-2, 10-8-1 ECAC Hockey), the Garnet Chargers have now strung together three straight W's over conference foes for the first time since the beginning of last season when they defeated Rensselaer twice and St. Lawrence. Union's opponents on the current winning streak carried a little more swagger, with Cornell ranked #9/10 at the time, and Harvard two spots ahead of Union in the NPI leading into Friday night's contest.

Pelton won the puck behind the net and passed out in front to Jeannette on the doorstep to start the scoring at 13:32 of the first. Playing in his 12th game this season, Jeannette slid the puck past Ben Charette, marking Union's third straight game scoring first. Union had a streak of five consecutive games scoring first from Nov. 8 - Nov. 21 and went 3-2 in those contests.

In a matchup between the top-two penalty-killing teams in the country, Union had the first chance to back up its second-best PK ranking. Korpi did not face a shot during Harvard's first power play at the end of the first period, but his defense in front blocked three shots for him.

Senior Colby MacArthur and sophomore Lucas Buzziol padded Union's lead in the first half of the second period. Just like Jeannette's score, MacArthur's and Buzziol's goal both came right in front of the crease. Buzziol later assisted on Jeannette's second score at 12:46 of the middle frame, giving the sophomore 10 points over his last seven games. With at least one point in each of those contests, Buzziol also owns the longest point streak of the season for the Garnet Chargers.

Korpi had to make three saves on the penalty kill the second time around, but once again, Union's penalty kill answered the call. Both teams each had one more chance on the power play in the third period, but not only did neither team break through with the man advantage, but there were no goals scored in the final 20 minutes at even strength or when Harvard pulled its goaltender with 4:35 left in the game.

After the results Friday night across the league, Union remains in sixth place but is only two points behind Harvard and Princeton for fourth place in the ECAC Hockey standings.

The Garnet Chargers get another crack at a team above them in the NPI and conference standings, aiming for their fourth ranked victory of the season. They take on #14/12 Dartmouth on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 5 p.m. Union will also celebrate Senior Night after the game to honor its nine seniors.
