Men's Swimming & Diving Ends Regular Season With Second Straight Win

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's swimming & diving team thumped SUNY New Paltz 182-81 Friday night at Alumni Gym Pool.

The 101-point victory for the Garnet Chargers featured 12 event victories, four lifetime-best swims, and gave Union its first .500 record in the regular season since going 5-3 in 2013-14. Union finished 5-5 with back-to-back victories.

The Garnet Chargers started their final regular-season meet with six consecutive event wins, beginning with first-years Tripp Kennedy and Troy Luley, senior Drew Hill, and sophomore Nick Megas in the 200 medley relay (1:39.15).

Luley and Hill both won two more individual events each throughout the meet, and Kennedy tacked on two podium finishes. Luley won the 200 freestyle (1:50.12) and the 100 breaststroke (58.91), while Hill touched the wall first in both the 100 backstroke (54.76) and the 100 butterfly (52.33). Kennedy had the second-fastest 50 freestyle time of the night (22.54) and then stretched things out to win the 500 freestyle (4:51.63).

In the other distance event, junior Gavin Baltes won the 1,000 freestyle with a lifetime-best time of 10:32.92. First-years Lucas Miller and Chase Reynolds earned lifetime-bests during second-place finishes in the 100 back (58.79) and the 200 butterfly (2:18.68), respectively. Sophomore Myles Gronbach snagged a lifetime-best in the 1,000 free, going 12:07.23 behind Baltes.

Union will compete in the Liberty League championships, beginning Wednesday, Feb. 18. The four-day meet is held in Ithaca, N.Y.
