SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The #20 Union College men's hockey team defeated Brown University 9-0 on Saturday evening at M&T Bank Center, recording its most goals in an ECAC Hockey Tournament game ever and advancing to the quarterfinals for a three-game series against Princeton University, beginning Friday, March 13 at 7 p.m.
On its way to a second consecutive quarterfinal berth, fifth-seeded Union (22-10-3) accomplished something it has never done in the history of the program and shut out a team in three consecutive meetings. The Garnet Chargers blanked the 12th-seeded Bears (5-24-2) for the third consecutive time this season, outscoring them 16-0 over that stretch. Sophomore Cameron Korpi also registered his fifth clean sheet of the season and second in a row, tying him with Kris Mayotte and Troy Grosenick for the second-most shutouts in a single season in program history. Adding to Korpi's historic day, he also broke Colin Steven's Union record for the longest individual shutout streak by going 153:48 without allowing a goal. Stevens '15 went 140:40 without allowing a goal from Feb. 22 - March 15, 2014.
While Korpi was called on to make 22 saves in his shutout, the Garnet Chargers fired off their most shots on goal since 2012, finishing the night with 59 looks on target. Senior Parker Lindauer tallied 10 shots in the game, leading his team, and also earning three points on the day.
Lindauer was one of four Garnet Chargers with three points in the blowout. Senior Colby MacArthur and sophomore Lucas Buzziol had two goals and an assist each, and sophomore Ben Muthersbaugh had two assists to along with his 19th score of the season. MacArthur continued his hot streak since the beginning of February and has produced 17 points in the last 11 games.
Buzziol scored the first goal of the game, bringing a soldout crowd to its feet at 8:19 in the opening period. Lindauer, MacArthur, and Buhr all scored in the middle stanza, with MacArthur's coming on the power play. Union killed off two penalties in the second period as well, extending the Garnet Chargers' streak to six games without allowing a power-play goal. They have killed off 16 consecutive penalties over that stretch.
The Garnet Chargers exploded for five goals to wrap up their memorable playoff win and postseason debut inside M&T Bank Center. Senior Ethan Benz scored his first goal of the season during the offensive outburst, marking one of Union's three tallies on the man advantage in the final 20 minutes of play.
Muthersbaugh and Buzziol both scored on the power play that period as well, with senior Nate Hanley assisting on both man-up goals. Hanley increased his career point total to 97 and is one assist away from tying Jason Walters '10 and Brett Supinski '19 for the eighth-most career assists in Union's Division-I history.
Union's four power-play goals were its most in a game since also converting four times against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Oct. 25, 2024.
The Garnet Chargers head to Princeton for the quarterfinals riding a seven-game unbeaten streak, dating back to Friday, Feb. 13. By the time the puck drops on March 13, that unbeaten streak will be one month old with the Garnet Chargers averaging five goals per game over that stretch.
