#67 Men's Tennis Returns North with 6-1 Win over Oneonta

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Union College men's tennis team, ranked 67th in Division III in the latest ITA national rankings, returned north and returned to the win column on Friday afternoon, defeating SUNY Oneonta by a 6-1 score at Oneonta's Dr. Heissan Tennis Courts.

Junior Shreyas Kode and first-year Alain Uzelac led the way for Union (7-5) with a pair of victories each, as seven different Garnet Chargers were a part of at least one win on the day.

The visitors started the afternoon by taking the bottom two doubles flights to earn the opening point. Uzelac and senior Christian Crowder started off with a quick 6-0 win over Amine Abidi and Ryan Geller at the third flight, before Kode and first-year Simon Philip took down Jaden Ritterman and Peter Pitaleff by a 6-4 margin at second doubles.

It did not take long for Union to clinch the win in singles play, as the visitors earned three quick wins to get to the four-point mark. Uzelac and classmate Reilly Fowles rolled past their opponents at the bottom two flights, with Uzelac losing only one game to Ryan Geller in a 6-0, 6-1 fifth-singles victory and Fowles needing only two extra games in a 6-2, 6-0 win over Nate Inzerillo at the sixth flight. Junior Solen Bellemare finished off the win with a 6-0, 6-1 first-singles victory over Chris Chippari.

The visitors added two more wins to the ledger via third-set supertiebreakers. Kode finished off his undefeated day by storming back from a set down to defeat Ritterman, 1-6, 6-2, (10-6) at the third flight. Junior Daniel Saxe also picked up a second-singles comeback win over William Schmid, posting a 3-6, 6-1, (10-8) triumph.

Union will be back on the court on Sunday with a Liberty League matchup at ITA #44 Vassar College beginning at 10 a.m.
