SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team scored its most runs in a game since 2001 during a sweep of SUNY Cobleskill Thursday evening at Central Park "A" Diamond, beating the Fighting Tigers 25-4 and 3-1.
Game 1: Union 25, SUNY Cobleskill 4
Union (9-13) continued a previously suspended game from March 31 against SUNY Cobleskill (8-11) with two outs and runners on first and third. Before the game was suspended due to lightning and rain 10 days ago, Union had built a 14-1 lead thanks in part to home runs from senior
Caleb Miller and first-year
Seamus Condon.
After the game resumed Thursday, Union went on to score 11 more runs in the final two frames. Despite entering the game midway through the action, first-years Braden White and Dennis Mulhearn both recorded multiple hits. White was 3-3 and drove in three runs while also scoring twice. Thirteen Union batters recorded at least one hit, sophomore Will Mumby was hit by two pitches, and junior Ryan Kolodziejczyk walked twice. As a unit, Union drew eight walks and was hit by eight pitches.
First-year Lucas Miller earned the win, striking out eight in six innings.
Union scored 20+ runs in a game on the Fighting Tigers for the third game in the history of the series. The Garnet Chargers' 25 runs were their most since a 25-7 win over Oberlin College on March 26, 2001.
Game 2: Union 3, SUNY Cobleskill 1
The Fighting Tigers jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game. With a new pitcher each of the first three frames, SUNY Cobleskill held Union scoreless with just three hits allowed through the first three innings.
First-year Evan Lagemann led off the fourth with a single, starting a rally. Back-to-back walks from senior Nico Lambros and first-year Jack McKillop loaded the bases, and Mulhearn tied the game up with a sacrifice fly. After making his first collegiate start Thursday, Mulhearn now has three RBIs and a .571 average through seven at-bats.
Caleb Miller gave Union a 3-1 lead with a two-RBI double, pushing his career RBI total to 114. He is six runs batted in away from trying Colin Kelly '21 for the program record.
Junior Garrick Godin was in line for the win after pitching a scoreless frame before Union took the lead for good in the fourth.
Senior Jack Klein held the lead for Union with two scoreless innings, and then senior Anthony Izzo earned his first save in a Garnet Charger uniform to closeout the sweep. Izzo allowed the first batter of the seventh to reach, but got three outs on the next two batters thanks to a pair of comebackers. He started a 1-6-3 double play on the second grounder to the mound, closing out the game with an exclamation point.
Union heads to the 585 for three games against the University of Rochester, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 11.
