SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team built up a 14-1 lead in the fourth inning on Tuesday night against SUNY Cobleskill, but the Garnet Chargers could not get past a consistent rain that turned into lightning in the bottom of the fourth inning and the game was eventually postponed.
The Garnet Chargers and Fighting Tigers will complete Tuesday's game during Cobleskill's next visit to Schenectady, which is slated for April 9. The teams will finish the previously started contest and then play a seven-inning game as part of a quasi-doubleheader.
First-year
Seamus Condon led the charge for Union with his first collegiate home run and was joined with three runs batted in by classmate
Evan Lagemann and sophomore
Dylan Swarts. First-year
Lucas Miller was in line for his first collegiate win before the game was halted, after allowing one unearned run on two hits and striking out six in four innings of work.
Union got the scoring started with a two-out rally in the first, as senior
Caleb Miller led off with a walk, stole second base with two outs and came home on a two-bagger from classmate
Andrew Keaveney. Three more were added to the total in the second thanks to a two-run homer by Condon and a sacrifice fly from Swarts.
The Fighting Tigers got on the board with an unearned run back in the top of the third, but Union responded with four in the bottom half. The big blows of the frame came on a two-run double by Lagemann and a two-run shot off the scoreboard in left by Miller.
The offense kept rolling as the rain kept falling in the fourth inning, with Union scoring six times before the teams were eventually pulled off the field at 7:15 p.m. Approximately 25 minutes later the game was officially stopped due to excessive lightning in the area.
Union is slated to return to action on Thursday with a non-conference game against SUNY New Paltz beginning at 4 p.m. at Central Park.
