Women's Crew Competes at Novak Memorial

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Union College women's crew team had two boats on the water at the Novak Memorial Metropolitan Championship Saturday afternoon, the annual regatta hosted by Iona University.

Sophomore Isabelle Canaveral was the coxswain for Union's Novice/JV Varsity 8+ boat, leading first-year Patsy Whalen (stroke), first-year Adelaide Dieden (7 seat), first-year Mahi Mattu (6 seat), junior Elsie Paxton (5 seat), first-year Sandhya Padmanabhan (4 seat), junior Mariah Jackson (3 seat), first-year Srushti Pathak (2 seat), and first-year Ainsley Moore (bow).

Senior Melina McGovern sat in the Varsity 8+ boat as the coxswain for junior Amy Gagliardi (stroke), junior Emma Friedman (7 seat), first-year Jordan Long (6 seat), senior Nora Hillery (5 seat), junior Susanna Harrow (4 seat), junior Olivia Werkema (3 seat), junior Sarah Hannan (2 seat), and first-year Avery Sommerville (bow).

Canaveral's eight were the first on the water in lane 5 of the 2,000-meter, six-lane buoyed course for Union on Saturday, racing in the second heat of the Novice/JV 8+. Union finished third in the heat, beating out Division-I George Mason for a spot in the Novice/JV Grand Final later in the afternoon.

Fordham ended up winning the final of the Novice/JV race, but Union was the only DIII school in the final and placed fourth with a time of 8:19.27, beating out Stony Brook and Iona.

In the Varsity 8+ event, McGovern led her team across the finish line in 7:45.75 for a fifth-place position. The Garnet Chargers finished ahead of the only other DIII school in that race, Scranton, by over two minutes.

The Garnet Chargers will race next on Friday, May 8 in Pennsauken, N.J. at the Dad Vail Regatta.
