The Dutchmen dominated the Big Green on both ends of the ice on Friday, taking game one of the series by a score of 2-0. The win was Union's first at Dartmouth since February of 2001.
Leading off the scoring was freshman Scott Seney, taking his second power play goal of the season at 4:06 of the first. Seney's goal was assisted by Kris Goodjohn and Joel Beal. Goodjohn's assist was his first point in two games. The Dutchmen were afforded five power play opportunities in the period, including an extended 5x3, but were unable to capitalize on the remaining man-advantages. Freshman goalie Kris Mayotte made 10 saves in the period while Nick Bouche rmade 14 for the Big Green.
The second period provided more action from Union's special teams with Kris Goodjohn netting the only goal, his second shorthander of the season, at 11:26.The goal was assisted by Beal and Chris DiStefano. Mayotte held the Big Green scoreless, making eight saves in the middle period. Boucher made 10 saves for Dartmouth.
Dartmouth tried to turn the tables in the third, outshooting the Dutchmen 14 to 6, but Mayotte came up with numerous big saves to earn his second career shutout. Boucher was pulled at 18:25 but the Big Green were unable to score with the man-advantage. Final shots were 32-31 in favor of Union.
The Dutchmen tried to keep the momentum from Friday's win and carry it into Saturday's game vs. Vermont. They netted four unanswered goals to overcome a 2-0 deficit vs. the Catamounts for just their second win at Gutterson Fieldhouse (DI). The win also marked the first road sweep vs. Dartmouth and Vermont in Union's DI tenure.
Vermont took a 1-0 lead late in the first period on Jeff Miles' 14th goal of the season while Vermont had a two-man advantage. Scott Mifsud and Thomas Hajek assisted on the goal, which came at 15:47. Vermont outshot Union 7-4 in the opening period.
The Catamounts made it 2-0 with another power-play goal in the second period, this one off the stick of Brady Leisenring at 9:59. Union cut into the Vermont lead when Nathan Gillies scored on the power play at 11:51. Jordan Webb and Kris Goodjohn assisted on the goal, Gillies' 11th of the season.
The Dutchmen then tied it early in the third when Brian Kerr scored from a tough angle, beating Conschafter high to the stick side at 4:15. Randy Dagenais and Chris DiStefano assisted on the goal, Kerr's sixth of the season. Webb capped the comeback for Union, putting them up 3-2 at 11:54 of the third period, with his team-leading 13th goal of the season. The gamewinner was taken on a miscue by Vermont's defense and was assisted by Nathan Gillies and Joel Beal.
UVM pulled their goalie at 18:21 of the third, but freshman Scott Seney scored the empty net goal for the 4-2 win. Seney's second goal of the weekend was assisted by Glenn Sanders and Kris Goodjohn.
Conschafter recorded 15 saves for Vermont, while Mayotte stopped 23 for Union. Mayotte's record improved to 8-5-2 overall and 5-3-1 in conference.
