Schenectady, N.Y. (January 23, 2004) — It took overtime, but the Union College Dutchmen posted their first victory since November 15th, 2003. Junior Jordan Webb scored the overtime goal with just 2:02 left to play to record a hat-trick and send the Dutchmen bench overflowing onto the ice for the first celebration in over two months.
Sacred Heart and Union entered the game with the nations two longest winless streaks, the Dutchmen having not won in twelve games, and the Pioneers in nine. The Dutchmen got on the board first at 18:07 of the first period as Jordan Webb scored his first goal since December 6th, as juniors Matt Vagvolgyi and Brian Kerr had some nice passing for the assists. Webb put the Dutchmen up 2-0 at 9:06 of the second period off a Ben McManama rebound, with junior Joel Beal also getting an assist. Up 2-0 in the second period, it seemed the usual story as Sacred Heart got on the board as senior Marc-Andre Fournier scored his tenth goal of the season at 10:09. Early in the third period, the Pioneers got the equalizer as junior Noel Henck beat Dutchmen sophomore Tim Roth up high.
Sacred Heart would silence the Dutchmen faithful as sophomore center Rocco Molinaro put the Pioneers up 3-2 with just 1:54 remaining. Coach Nate Leaman pulled Roth with 1:18 left to play and it paid off as junior Matt Vagvolgyi scored his fourth of the season off a Joel Beal rebound, putting it five-hole between Pioneer junior Kevin LaPointe. Union went to overtime for the fifth time this season and Webb sent the Messa Rink fans into a frenzy as he recorded his sixth goal of the season to give the Dutchmen the victory. Junior captain Joel Beal ended up with three assists on the night, and Matt Vagvolgyi had a goal and an assist.
Tim Roth went to 3-1-0 on the season making 18 saves for the Dutchmen. Junior goalie Kevin LaPointe played a brilliant game, making 27 saves for the Pioneers. Taking the loss, LaPointe is now 4-10-3 on his season.
The Dutchmen will take a rare Saturday off and return to ECAC action next weekend as they travel to take on their former coach Kevin Sneddon and the Vermont Catamounts on Friday night, before traveling to New Hampshire on Saturday evening to play at Dartmouth. Both games begin at 7:00pm.
