UMass Lowell Sneaks Past Union; 3-2

Box Score

Schenectady, NY (Oct. 30, 2004) A late charge by Union kept them within striking distance, but UMass Lowell was able to stave off the attack and snuck away from Messa Rink with a 3-2 win over the Dutchmen on Saturday evening.  Union battled back from a two-goal deficit in the third period on a goal by Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, OH), who netted his second in as many days.  The final 20 seconds of the game was a flurry of activity as two more goals were scored, one by each team, but the Dutchmen were unable to get the equalizer.

UMass Lowell came in as a scoring threat on the power play, with nine of their 10 goals coming with an extra attacker.  Tonight proved no different as Grant Farrell scored on the power play at 8:44 of the first period to give the River Hawks the first strike.  Farrell had a bit of good fortune on the play as his shot glanced off a Union defender's stick and past Dutchmen goaltender Justin Mrazek (Regina, SASK).

The River Hawks struck again just over two minutes later, once again with the man advantage.  Brad King fired a shot off a pass from Jason Tejchma.  With his back to the goal, King whipped around and slung the puck past Mrazek into the back of the net.

Putting the first period behind them, Union came out firing as they outshot UMass Lowell 25-11 over the next two periods.  Peter Vetri held the Dutchmen scoreless through the second though, making 13 of his 30 saves during that time.

Coyle finally answered for Union at 4:41 of the third period.  The freshman tipped a shot by Phil McDavitt (Duxbury, MA) and was able to redirect the puck in front of the net and right past Vetri.

With 1:50 left Union pulled Mrazek in favor of and extra attacker and pressured the River Hawks defensive zone.  A delay of game penalty on UMass Lowell's Matt Collar gave the Dutchmen even more of an advantage.  Ben Walter was finally able to pull his team out of trouble with 19 seconds remaining though, as one of his clearing attempts found the empty net on the other end of the ice.

Still on the power play, Union came at the River Hawks again and capitalized with six seconds left on a goal by Brian Kerr (Kirkland, QUE).  That would be as close as the Dutchmen would come however, as they ran out of time in their comeback attempt.

Mrazek came up with 20 saves for Union in his second start of the season.

Union (1-5-0) begins ECACHL play next weekend when they host St. Lawrence on November 5th at 7:00 p.m.
