Box ScoreProvidence, RI (Dec. 4, 2004) Union was shutout for just the second time by a 2-0 score at Brown for its third straight loss of the season. Union outshot the Bears 29-17 over the first two periods but were unable to connect on its offensive opportunities. They fall to 7-8-1 overall and 6-2 in ECACHL play.
Brown capitalized on the power play at 15:52 of the first period to take the first lead of the game. Union was caught on a line change as Brown goaltender Adam D'Alba took noticed and sent a quick pass up to Paul Baier in the neutral zone. Baier pushed the puck up to Les Haggett on the far side, who buried it in the back of the net with a hard wrist shot over the glove of Union goaltender Justin Mrazek (Regina, SASK) who finished with 20 saves.
Union had a few chances to tie the game in the first period but could not get anything past D'Alba who sported a 36-save effort for the shutout. Olivier Bouchard (Quebec City, QUE) and Jason Ortolano (Carteret, NJ) had their attempts turned aside to keep the score unchanged.
Other scoring opportunities presented themselves for Union at 2:03 of the second period but Jonathan Poirier's (St. Jerome, QUE) shot hit the post and a shot by Scott Seney (Silver Spring, MD) seconds later was covered by D'Alba.
In the third period Mrazek came through for Union to prevent Brown from extending its lead with a big save on Brian Ihnacak right in front of the net at 6:30. The Dutchmen started the period on the power play because of a boarding penalty by Brown's Antonin Roux at 18:53 of the second. Union came up empty on that attempt and would finish 0-7 for the game.
D'Alba continued to frustrate Union's offense by coming up with another pair of great stops though five minutes after Mrazek's. He held his ground against Seney who came up empty on a shot after receiving a centering pass from behind the net by Jordan Webb (Nepean, ONT). D'Alba bested that save with another one against Poirier at 13:36.
Union pulled Mrazek in favor of an extra attacker with 1:38 to go, but could still not produce a goal. Bouchard had a chance to tie the game up during that stretch but misfired on a wide open net with 1:01 left to play.
Gerry Burke wrapped up the scoring with a ricochet shot off the boards in Brown's defensive zone that sailed down into Union's empty net.
Union continues its road swing next week with a pair of games against Wayne State beginning on Friday, December 10th at 7:00 p.m.
