Box ScorePOUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.Frank Arcuri pitched two and two-thirds scoreless relief innings and Ben Brown scored on a two-out throwing error in the bottom of the ninth as Union won its Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association opener, 2-1, over Vassar in the first game of a doubleheader. The Dutchmen won the nitecap, 19-1, with an offensive attack that included 22 base hits.
The sweep left the Garnet with an overall record of 7-7.
Union took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning of the first game when Kyle Murphy stoked a two-out single that scored Matt Smith. Vassar tied the game in the bottom of the inning and before loading the bases with one out in the last of the seventh. Arcuri came on in relief of starter Jerry Schulman (who allowed one run and just two hits in six and a third innings). Arcuri got the first batter he faced to hit into a second-to-short-to-first double play.
Senior Jim Griglun was the star of the second game for the Dutchmen as the slugger collected four hits in six at bats and drove in six runs. Griglun ripped two doubles, a triple and scored twice.
Ben Brown was four-for-five with three runs scored out of the No. 9 position while Dan Mehleisen had three hits, three rbi and scored twice. Murphy also had three rbi while Smith ripped a home run and drove in a pair of runs.
Dave Masi pitched a complete-game five-hitter that included four strikeouts.
