SCHENECTADY, N.YMike McCurley's 50-yard punt return set up a one-yard plunge by quarterback Nick Rosetti with 12:08 left in the fourth quarter as Muhlenberg rallied past Union, 23-18, in a non-league Division III football game on Frank Bailey Field. The win improved Muhlenberg's record to 2-0 while the Dutchmen fell to 0-2.
The Dutchmen opened the game with a 73-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Tony Marotti to wide out Ryan Twitchell to give Union a 6-0 lead following the missed PAT kick. The Marotti-to-Twitchell combination resulted in a 32-yard touchdown with 5:49 left in the first quarter leaving the Dutchmen with a 12-0 advantage as the two-point conversion attempt failed.
The Mules got on the board with 2:58 remaining in the opening period when Mark Bennett forced a fumble saw the ball travel 39 yards backwards into the Dutchmen's end zone where it was recovered by Tom Wargacki. Brian Hendershot added the PAT kick to cut Muhlenberg's deficit to 12-7.
Union came right back by taking the ensuing kickoff and driving 63 yards in 11 plays. The four minute, 12-second drive concluded with Marotti finding Twitchell for a 20-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion again failed leaving Union with an 18-7 lead with 13:46 left in the second quarter.
Punter Ryan Sassaman set up the Mules' next points when his kick traveled 46 yard to the Dutchmen's one. Union's fourth-down punt was blocked by Phil Gasker giving Muhlenberg a safety and cutting its deficit to 18-9. The Dutchmen's free kick gave the Mules a first down on the Dutchmen's 48 and the visitors needed just eight plays to travel the distance with Rosetti connecting with Chris Giannini for a 17-yard touchdown. Hendershot's PAT kick helped Muhlenberg go into the half trailing by just two points, 18-16.
Both teams missed scoring opportunities during a scoreless fourth quarter. Union's Mike Flanagan, who played the game with a cast on his arm, intercepted his second pass of the game giving the Dutchmen possession on the Mules' 40. A fourth down pass from the Muhlenberg 25 fell incomplete turning the ball back over to the Mules. Muhlenberg missed field goals of 43 and 27 yards during the period.
