Box ScoreSchenectady, NY (Jan. 15, 2005) Special teams plagued Union again, resulting in its second straight one-goal loss as they were defeated by No. 9 Colgate 1-0 Saturday night at Messa Rink. The Raiders' Jon Smyth scored his fifth power play goal of the season at 11:26 of the first period in what would prove to be the game-winner. The Dutchmen failed to record a single shot on net during their power play opportunities as they finished 0-for-3. Union is now 10-12-1 overall and 7-5-0 in the ECACHL.
Shots were held in check from the start as Colgate held a slight 7-5 advantage in the first period. A holding penalty on Union's Jason Ortolano (Carteret, NJ) gave the Raiders a shot at the game's first power play. They were 20.4 percent in league play with the man advantage heading into tonight's game. Matt Torti set up the play with an initial shot to the right of Union goaltender Justin Mrazek (Regina, SASK) which the freshman was able to turn aside. Smyth was there in front to collect the rebound though and tuck it in.
Following a scoreless second period that saw just six shots apiece Union's chances started to emerge in the third. The first quality chance came at 11:55 on a shot by Joel Beal (Brantford, ONT) from the right side caught Colgate goaltender Steve Silverthorn on the blocker and rolled off him but continued across the crease and out of danger. Less than two minutes later Scott Seney (Silver Spring, MD) fired a shot from the left side toward the near post but Silverthorn was once again able to get a piece of the puck.
Union continued to pressure Colgate's net. At 14:02 Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, OH) found the puck after it deflected right to him off a Colgate player's skate. Silverthorn gave up a rebound chance on the save with Seney looking at a wide open net, but his shot sailed wide.
With just under two minutes to play Mrazek was pulled from goal for an extra attacker and the Dutchmen once again came up with five good scoring chances but could not produce the tying goal.
Silverthorn finished with 21 saves for his 16th win of the season, while Mrazek fell to 4-7 in an 18-save effort.
Union continues league play on the road next weekend. They face Clarkson to open the weekend on Friday, January 21st at 7:00 p.m.
