Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Union hunts down Falcons in 8-1 win

Box Score

Schenectady, N.Y. (Oct. 28, 2005) Union scored five goals in the third period to break open a two-goal advantage and skate away with a 8-1 win over Bentley at Messa Rink. The Dutchmen finished 3-for-7 on the power play. Sophomore Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, Ohio) registered one of those tallies and added three assists in a four-point effort to lead the home team.

Union scored a pair of first period goals to take the lead. The first came early in the period when Olivier Bouchard (Quebec City, QUE) scored his fourth power play goal of the season at 4:04. Bouchard took a pass in front from Lane Caffaro (Slave Lake, ALB) up at the point and blasted the puck to the left of Bentley goaltender Ray Jean. The shot broke the netminder's stick and trickled in between his pads. Senior Scott Seney (Silver Spring, MD) scored the second goal, also on the man advantage, at 19:54 from the same spot where Bouchard scored earlier. This time Seney took a pass across the front of the goal from Coyle and one-timed it home for what would prove to be the game-winner.

Following a second period goal by Union's T.J. Fox (Oswego, NY) at 11:59, Bentley was able to cut into the lead with a power play goal by Anthony Pellarin at 19:41. Sophomore Jaye Judd took the initial shot from the point that was turned aside by goaltender Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA). Pellarin was right there though to pick up the rebound and knock it in to make it 3-1.

The Falcons squandered a prime opportunity to make it a one goal game early in the third period. At 2:04 Pellarin found himself on a breakaway after picking up the loose puck in Union's zone. He skated in to Mayotte's left and fired a shot to the near post but the senior goaltender did not budge and smothered the puck.

After that it was all Union as the Dutchmen reeled off five unanswered goals. Coyle instigated the charge with the team's third power play goal of the night at 8:51 off a rebound shot in front by Bouchard. Jean was able to turn Bouchard's shot aside but the puck lay unclaimed in front of the goal until Coyle skated in and took ownership for his fourth goal of the season.

Freshman Matt Cook (Belle Mead, NJ) capped off the scoring spree with his first goal of the season at 18:26. Fellow classmate Augie DiMarzo (West Haven, CT) picked up his third assist of the season on the play.

Mayotte made 27 saves for his second win of the season. He was replaced by Dan Tatar (Queensbury, NY), who did not face a single shot, with 3:19 left to play. On the other end, Jean stopped 24 shots in the loss.

There were a total of 20 penalties handed out in a tightly called game, Union was whistled for 11 while Bentley was cited for nine.

Union held a slight advantage in shots, 32-28.

The Dutchmen look to extend their unbeaten streak to four games when they head to UMass-Lowell tomorrow in a 7:00 p.m. matchup with the River Hawks at Tsongas Arena.
