Box ScoreLowell, MA (Oct. 29, 2005)- Union extended its unbeaten streak to four games with a 4-3 win over UMass-Lowell at Tsongas Arena. After trailing for most of the game, the Dutchmen scored two unanswered goals in the third period after tying things up to improve to 3-2-1 on the season and avenge last season's loss at home against the River Hawks.
UMass-Lowell jumped out to a 2-0 lead within the first 10 minutes of the game. Junior Jason Tejchma sent a high wrist shot to the far post after taking a cross ice pass from the right face off circle at 5:13 for the game's opening tally. The lead was extended just over four minutes later on the power play. Bobby Robins redirected a shot in front past Union goaltender Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA), who was screened on the play. The initial shot came from J.R. Bria from the top of the left face-off circle.
Junior Olivier Bouchard (Quebec City, QUE) scored his sixth goal in four games to cut the deficit in half at 10:19 on Union's first shot of the game. Defender Lane Caffaro (Slave Lake, ALB) pushed the puck up ice to T.J. Fox (Oswego, NY) to the left of River Hawks goalie Peter Vetri. Fox sent a short pass to Bouchard who lifted a shot over Vetri to the near side.
Lowell's netminder kept his team up by a goal with a great save at 1:31 of the second period. Union sophomore Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, OH) sent in a close-range shot from the left that was turned aside by Vetri. Caffaro picked up the rebound with an open net on the opposite side but Vetri quickly recovered to close the door and kick the puck aside.
Union displayed some defensive talent in the second period as well to keep within striking distance. The Dutchmen fought off a Lowell power play four minutes in and Mike Harr (Norwood, MA) broke up a prime scoring opportunity in front during the closing seconds of the advantage with a poke check that sent the puck off the mark of a waiting River Hawk.
Dutchman Chris Konnick (Binghamton, NY) came back on the other end and tied the game at 2-2 with his first goal of the season at 11:47, stuffing home his own rebound. This time it was Fox creating the opportunity with a pass up ice to Coyle who found Konnick in front. Vetri denied Konnick on his first attempt but a second effort by the senior center was rewarded.
Union showed a lot more fight in the third period and it paid off as they scored two early goals to take control of the game. Torren Delforte (Shortsville, NY) gave the Dutchmen their first lead at 2:45. Delforte redirected a shot in front by Jonathan Poirier (St. Jerome, QUE) for his first goal of the season. Augie DiMarzo (West Haven, CT) set the play up with a pass to Poirier.
A minute later Chris Potts (Phillipsburg, NJ) extended the lead to two goals with his second of the season after a Lowell defender lost his edge and coughed up the puck in his own zone. Potts picked up the loose puck and lifted a close-range shot that beat Vetri, once again over his left shoulder.
The River Hawks made it 4-3 at 12:55 with a power play goal from Jeremy Hall. The junior roofed his shot from the left face-off circle for his third goal of the season. Union held strong the rest of the way though to hang on for the win.
Mayotte finished with 36 saves for his second straight win. He made several key stops in the second half of the final period to weather a flurry of shots by the River Hawks. One of those saves came at 7:19 on a Lowell power play. Mayotte made a stop in front and fell back on the puck as it broke free and crawled back toward goal.
Vetri made 30 stops for the River Hawks.
Union opens ECACHL play on the road next week in the North Country beginning with a matchup against St. Lawrence on Friday, November 4th at 7:00 p.m.
