Union drops ECACHL opener at #20 St. Lawrence, 6-2

Box Score

Canton, N.Y. (Nov. 4, 2005) St. Lawrence set the pace early with a goal 32 seconds into the game and skated to an eventual 6-2 win over Union in the ECACHL opener for both teams. The loss snapped a four-game unbeaten streak for the Dutchmen (3-3-1, 0-1-0) and was just the second loss against the Saints (5-2-0, 1-0-0) in seven meetings but second straight at Appleton Arena.

T.J. Trevelyan got the quick strike for his first goal of the season and gave St. Lawrence the early 1-0 lead. Trevelyan got the puck from Mike Zbriger at the Union blue line and skated around a Dutchmen defender. He came across the front of the goal and lifted his shot past goaltender Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA) on the right side.

Olivier Bouchard (Quebec City, QUE) appeared to tie the game at 17:59, skating around a St. Lawrence defender at the point and sending a shot past St. Lawrence goaltender Justin Pesony to the inside right post. After the puck went in the whistle sounded, but it was to send Bouchard to the penalty box for holding.

Instead of the game being tied, St. Lawrence converted on the power play opportunity at 19:00 to make it 2-0. This time Zbriger and Trevelyan reversed roles and Zbriger stuffed home a rebound. Trevelyan's initial shot came from the right side and was saved by Mayotte but the puck came loose to the weak side where Zbriger was waiting.

The Saints got another power play goal from their top line in the second period from John Zeiler at 6:17. The senior collected another loose puck in front off a rebound that came from Trevelyan at the right face-off circle. The line of Trevelyan, Zbriger, and Zeiler combined for five goals and 15 points.

Union battled back to make it 3-1 just over two minutes later when T.J. Fox (Oswego, NY) got his fourth goal of the season. With the Dutchmen on the two-man advantage Fox sent a blast from above the right face-off circle after taking a pass across the top of the zone from Lane Caffaro (Slave Lake, ALB) who received the puck from Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, OH) down low.

St. Lawrence came right back with a goal in transition at 11:04 from Jamie Parker. Zeiler sent the puck up ice to Trevelyan after a save by Pesony. Trevelyan led Parker into the Union zone who converted in front for his second goal of the season.

Fox scored his second goal of the night in the waning minutes of the second period to make it 4-2. Sophomore Michael Beynon (Nepena, ONT) poke checked the puck up to Fox at center ice. The freshman skated into the St. Lawrence zone and sent a high slap shot past Pesony in front between the face off circles.

St. Lawrence answered back with two power play goals in the third period to put the game away. The first came at 7:49 on a two-man advantage by Zbriger who converted on a scramble in front of the Union goal. Zeiler followed that up at 16:40 with his second goal of the game for the 6-2 final.

The game was tightly called with a total of 29 penalties being called. St. Lawrence finished 4-for-14 on the power play while Union converted just once on 14 attempts. Union was outshot 39-28.

Mayotte made 13 saves on the night in the loss. On the other end Pesony stopped 26 shots for the win.

Union wraps up its North Country trip tomorrow against Clarkson at 7:00 p.m.
